Question Cobs and filters

I know this must be like eating filet mignon with plastic utensils but I smoke all my tobacco out of corn cob pipes. They're cheap and smoke well and since they are cheap they get the spousal approval. Better than not smoking at all.

Anyway, I was wondering if other cobbers out there used the paper filters that come in them. Is using filters like rinsing off the filet before you put it on the plate?

I only have one cob and the filter isn't in it.

I toss 'em. They seem to me to fill no purpose other than gumming up the works.

I didn't even know there was one in mine. Then I started noticing the draw getting very tight. So I was cleaning it out one day when it was cooled down and found that filter inside.

Took it out and it's been smoking like a champ since!

Re: Cobs and filters

funny you should bring this up. i got a cob from kheffelf a while back, smokes great. it had a filter...
less than an hour ago, i took it out, packed the pipe and smoked it on the way back to work.

the only thing that filter did was smell bad, probably would have changed the flavor of the smoke i was about to enjoy.

Re: Cobs and filters

I always ditched the filters. They just seemed to gum up the works and keep a pipe cleaner from running through. Same for the Savinellis that use the little balsa filters. They would probably be great when smoking an ooey-gooey aromatic, if changed frequently.

Re: Cobs and filters

I just got my first cob and baccy - I threw the filter away before I smoked my first bowl. Seemed kind of superfluous and I just didn't see the point.

Re: Cobs and filters

the filters work good for removing extra moisture from the stem.
you dont need to run a pipe cleaner in there while smoking them.

but they only last 1 or 2 times, then they start to stink.

so i just leave em in on a fresh cob, then chuck em when they get smelly.

Re: Cobs and filters

I like cobs alright, but as far as a filter is concerned, it seems to draw too easy without filter. IMHO

at least with the missouri meerschaums, you can just pull the stem straight back, just like many briars. a little twist might be needed to help loosen it but nothing special is required.
