So is it concluded?

Don't honey the pipe. Man Law!

(of course if you like honey in your pipe go ahead. After all, Miller went ahead and put fruit in their beer.)

Out of curiosity, are there any honey-flavored aromatics?

Re: Gurgles, Honey & Ashes?

A Lorenzo Spitfire pipe I bought wasn't drilled that well and I had to do the spit/ash thing to mud up the bottom of the bowl a bit. I thought it was kinda gross at first, but I'll be damned...it worked. Great tip!

Ach! First bowl smoked after performing the maintenance (let it sit for three days), the pipe mud fell out while dumping ashes. I suppose I'll give it another go, but without doing something different I'm not sure the process will yield different results. Any suggestions?

I've been wondering how it will hold up to a salt/alky treatment. Surely it'll carbonize as tar filters into the mud pack.

Ok Ded, I had that happen to me once. I knocked it out on my hand and the whole fill came out but that was the only time it happened. I have used Durham's water putty (carpenter's putty) to raise the heal on one's that were way off like your's was. It worked fine but I don't know the affect over the long term with expansion/contraction. I've also used that to stop a burnout. Since its used in woodworking I don't really expect problems and its pretty resistant to heat. I've also heard of using plaster.
