Gurgles, Honey & Ashes?

Quite a bit of a low spot beneath the air hole on this 100 year old WDC military billiard. It has had a tendency to gurgle. Will honey mixed thick with ash massaged into the dip in the bowl really relieve the problem? It is now sitting, still gooey, waiting to harden up a bit.

I have read about this and now I attempt the fix. The smart money says..... yes or no?

Re: Gurgles, Honey & Ashes?

Hello Mister MaDuroo,

Are you trying to clean the resin out?
Here's a suggestion that often works for me:

Try putting the pipe in a ziplock bag with 1 part rock (ice cream) salt and 2-3 parts rubbing alchohol. Shake vigorously for about 5-10 mins.and your pipe will come out almost new.

Double bag it so it doesn't spill.

WARNING:
By removing the resin, you will lose the llavors that have been gradually accumulating as your pipe will come out almost like new.
However, the draw will be greatly improved.

I have found this to work beautifully on any resin stained items you might have.
Plus, saves on ineffective pipe cleaners.

Hope that helps,
(and I'm not talking about the wrong thing)

The pipe was clean/unsmoked on purchase. The gurgle seems to result from a low spot beneath the airhole. I have read that that filling the low (2mm?) spot with something that will solidfy can relieve the gurgles.

Oh oops, I DID have the wrong idea
Forgive me - I thought it was clogged.
My mistake.

I haven't tried the honey/ash tip before,
so I'll let the more knowledgable pipe smokers answer this for you.

Cigar Ash, no honey. Spit works, water is probably better.

Re: Gurgles, Honey & Ashes?

is it a fairly bent stem? like 1/2 bent or more?

i was thinking about this a week ago. seems a few years back i was buying someone a pipe to bomb them with and talking to the vendor they mentioned that bent pipes gurgle more than straight. he didn't explain why, but i think i may have figured it out just by using common sense.

of course, you have that little area to collect all the juices, but where to most of the juices go when you take a draw?
up the stem, of course.

if any of you have clear stem pipes, or a cob with those amber/clear stems, you can view for yourself. as you smoke, you'll see the condensation begin to build on the roof of the draught hole in the bit (starting closer to the bowl). okay, it rises, it's stuck to the roof of the hole....
if it's a straight stem, the condensation just sits there (unless you knock the pipe fairly good when tamping or knocking out some ash). if you do knock it around, the condensation will obviously move and bump into another bubble of condensation, making a larger one. that one will be easier to move if you change the angle you're holding the pipe (like in a bent pipe that's already at an angle).
so, if you don't bump a straight pipe, the condensation just sits there, not gurgling.

on a bent pipe, that stuff has gravity take course and causes those bubbles of condensation to combine, get bigger/heavier, and start to run down the inside of the hole toward the bowl. you get gurgle.

just my thoughts on that, i'm no GLP by any stretch, just some random daydreaming while driving in traffic with a pipe in my mouth, waiting to wreck and have that airbag shove a Mastro de Paja down my yapper... y'know, good times.

why would the dip "under" the draught hole cause gurgle? (no, i didn't read the link yet)
if it is under the draught hole in the bowl, you would have to have a swimming pools worth of condensation built up in order for it to rise the 2mm and block the draught hole... maybe the "gurgle" is in your stem and not in the bottom of the bowl?

Spit and cigar ash. Pipe mud. Brilliant! Thank you.

I read the article. Author sez:

"It is important to add that only high quality cigars should be used for this process..."

But where does one find a high quality cigar around here?

Yes Greg - mildly long stem, slowly half bent, modest swimming pool below the draft hole.

I've spent the past three weeks smoking 1/4 to 1/3 bowls in a poorly drilled full bent pipe to no avail. The draft hole is a staggering 1/8 inch from the bottom of the bowl. I finally gave up trying to naturally build bottom cake, and dug through the puff archive to come up with this article. Now, despite the author's call for only high quality cigar ash, I went ahead and used high quality pipe ash: McConnell's Scottish Cake - it burns down to a nice white/grey powder. A bit of ash, a bit of spit, and I've successfully mudded the heel of the bowl. Now to let it sit for a few days and see what happens. If this is successful, I may use the mud technique in the heel of all my pipes to create that first thin layer of ever elusive bottom cake.

It worked on mine. I smoke the WDC often, gurgle free.

Awesome! Glad it worked. Cool pipe - William DeMuth was one of the first American pipe companies. Definitely worth saving/repairing.

Its refreshing to see a thread where older members were still making guesses and trying to to learn the ropes.
