perique question

Could someone explain to me how in one tobacco blend the flavor of the blend is "spiced up" by the addition of perique, but in another it's "cooled down" with the addition of perique?

I was reading the descriptions of Russ Oulette's Hearth and Home when the question struck me.

Thanks.

BY ADDING a lot of perique a blend is spiced up, meaning it will have a black pepper spice to it. By adding a little perique to va's the va smokes cooler less tongue bite

To add to what mr. c correctly pointed out, Perique is a very unique tobacco that to the best of my knowledge is produced by only one tobacco farmer in St. James Parish LA. I suppose you could smoke it straight if the mood struck you, but it's not recommended and usually will make up no more than 5% of any given blend. Here's a site that has some interesting facts about how Perique is grown, fermented, aged, etc, before it arrives in your favorite Virginia/Perique blend, commonly referred to as VaPers.

I dont know how to put the flavors in words, but perique is very versatile.

The Best examples from my limited expirence, would be to smoke some Fillmore then some Solani 633.
Both have perique, but in one instance (Fillmore) the perique is somewhat spicy, but in a good way, like a spicy cigar..
on the other hand you have solani 633, which has less perique, and is a lighter, "cooler" blend that its straight VA counterparts.

Give both of them a try, i feel they are excellent examples of what perique can do!
