Danish & American "Pots"
I've been focusing my collection on different pot styles lately, finally finding some direction in my collection.
I really like the Danish Pots. Light weight, simple yet elegant lines. I just obtained 3 Pots from two Danish Masters.......Jess Chonowitsch and Teddy Knudsen. Unbelievable workmanship with an understated beauty. On the other side of the ocean, I have also been collecting Pots from Larry Roush. If you have seen his rustication and sandblasting, you know why his pipes are so sought after! The way he contrasts smooth rims with his deep, craggy blasting is a thing of beauty. His pipes are among the best smoking pipes on the planet! That brings up another point. In my short pipe smoking career, I have bought and tried many pipes......old classics and big name pipes. But when smoking one off pipes made by the "Masters" of our hobby, it becomes immediately evident why their pipes command higher prices........they all smoke like a dream! Plus the fact they are truly works of art, not to be reproduced exactly the same. Now I still love my old Charatans and Barlings, and a few other special pipes, but my little collection of Pots from two different worlds is really something special. I'm glad that I am finally finding some focus instead of just buying what appeals to me at the time. I have learned some hard lessons in my short trek, but it was worth it! |

Re: Danish & American "Pots"
a year ago, on another board, i said that this is what i wanted to do in '07. focus the pipes i collect toward shapes, sizes, makers, that i would like to keep... haven't really done that yet, but i need to start. i have started to build up a small selection of my favorite tobaccos though, which was my other plan.
i need to get in on the "danish" makers a little more than just Nording and Kark Eriks... just had a business trip cancel, so that's some less OT and food money i couldn't put forth those purchases.. ah well, i'll be home. bruce, you've been posting like crazy with your new found fondness of all things pipe related (did you win that Balkan Sobranie #10 a few nights back).

Re: Danish & American "Pots"
You know, you guys are going to wind up costing me a bunch of money. I was very content with my dozen or so Petersons, Savinellis, and Dunhills but now I'm really curious about all these fancy pipes. And I'm sure I'm going to like them, which means I'll have to buy more... *sigh*

Re: Danish & American "Pots"
I still have a couple more pipes to buy before a narrow down my buying to one shape or maker. I still have to add an Ascorti to my collection and a Mark Tinsky Black and Tan-my dream pipe at the moment and a Rad Davis pipe like the one JoeD was talking about for Mississippi Mud-that does look like the perfect combo.

Re: Danish & American "Pots"
IHT: mr.c and I are splitting it. That can was pretty beat up, but we took a chance and hopefully we will luck out.
As far as my "other" pipes, I had 12 Dunhills. I only have two now in my collection. I have 8 pipes for sale over at Briar Blues right now, hoping to re-coup a little cash. I may be putting a few more up for sale, an old Comoy "Royal" Billiard that is in pristine condition (rare) and possibly a Charatan "Special FH", and a Matzhold "F" Grade. |

Re: Danish & American "Pots"
Focus is good. After a post about bulldogs by one of our illustrious members I decided to get a few. Got lucky and found a Mark Tinskey. Also found a nice pipe by DeJarnett. Also have an order in to Steven Downie for another bulldog. So, I guess my focus has been on American pipe makers lately. Not that I have anything against foriegn makers, it just feels good sometimes to support the "local" guys.
