Starting last night I decided to crack a couple of new tins of "big name" burleys. Well I have to say
So far I have been smoking out of my C&D sampler and I have tried, in this order, Haunted Bookshop, Big & Burley, Bailey's Front Porch and Old Joe Krantz. Man this is some good chit!!! I liked HB well enough (but doubt I'll get more) and really appreciated B&B and BFP, but the OLK put me over the edge. Thisis probably the most complex pipe I have personally experienced. The fact that I have recently learned to appreciate VA's probably has a lot to do with how I am enjoying these Burleys. Being able to recognize the VA as a backdrop and then as it comes forefront is a real joy. Of these 3 OJK is by far my favorite, and to me this copy and paste description from Tobacco Reviews sums it up perfectly....(stolen from Blowfish) "Easy to pack, burns cool, dry, smooth and with no bite. Sweeter than Haunted Bookshop and Three Friars, OJK has Lots of flavor, aroma and body. A rare trait and a real treat. Complex enough it's never boring. Wonderful nicotine content. A spicey nuttiness from the Burleys and Perique compliment the soft and sweet red Virginia perfectly. Even at 25% content, the Perique is smooth and never overbearing. One caveat, the spicey sweet nuttiness can easily becoming quite "cigarish" if smoked to fast and or heavily." So can any of you BOTL's and SOTL's guide me towards any other special Burleys? I'd hope to hear about real tinned winners as well as the Burley equivalent of McC 5100 VA in bulk, which would help me save some coin for mass storage of daily smoke. Man I am starting to wonder if there is a style of pipe tobac that I don't like!!!??? VA's rule!! English/Balkans/Orientals rock!! And now Burleys!! Not to mention the Pipeworks & Wilke mild aro's that I really enjoy as a change of pace. I fear my 1000+ cigars are going to end up being VERY well aged by the time I get around to them ![]() |

Re: Burleys: I'm SO there!!
That didn't take you much time,
. Burley is, what burley is, and that's what i love about it. Plain as in Prince Al or dressed to the nines as in old joe K the stuff just smokes easy. My suggestions passed what you've started with would be Prince Albert =Cheap drug store stuff, yes but it's all burley. Smokes clean, clear, and somewhat quick without bite. Perfect for that quick smoke you don't have to worry about coming back to. Casing is lite and somewhat fruity that doesn't overpower. For me this is the 5100 of burley as it's good straight and helps tame other blends when mixed. C&D Crooner= cut cube Burley and deer tongue, nice change of pace smoke. As for tinned stuff Wessex Burlry Slices= is a very rich nice smoke, i want more. Solani Aged Burley Flake= which i haven't smoked yet but i've heard good things about ( Raleigh Pipe show table stop # 1, Solani samples ) MacB Navy Flake= fruit flakes and bite city G.L. Pease Cumberland= very good blend C&D Safe harbor flake= Doesn't do much for me but burn hot. (Bigger review next month for the TOTM) Hope this helps Glad you found the burley Root |

Re: Burleys: I'm SO there!!
Edwards pipe and tobacco has a burley 51. All cube cut burley. Nothing fancy, looks like potting soil but it is outstanding.

Re: Burleys: I'm SO there!!
Congrats on finding the Burleys. I like you are trying to get a taste for all the different baccys. When i started smoking pipes i got the best stuff my local B&M carries which is Captain Black Gold. Pipe Tobacco is scarce around my part of town so i have to order all mine from the internet. I Stumbled onto CS and found out how many other blends off tobacco are out there. My first purchase from the internet was Nightcap and Early Morning Pipe, which i still have and love. My second purchase I bought some Mac Baren Virgina No1 which i like but i think its too bitey so i am going to buy some McCelland 5100 next. I also bought some Mac Baren Bulk Burley. I like the Burley i haven't smoked enough of it to have an opinion on it yet. For my next order I want to find a good Virginia/Latika blend and a Virgina/perique blend. I am still looking for a good Cavendish blend. I have some Mac Baren Vanilla Creme loose cut and some Trout Stream which are good but not what i want out of a Cavendish blend. So if anyone has any suggestions on any of the those blends i would like some.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm Haunted Bookshop.
The Burley really sings in this blend, IMO. It's amazing how much HB they pack into that 8oz. C&D container..... Filled two mason jars to the brim after heavy compacting...... I smoke Haunted Bookshop every morn and every evening, good stuff |

Re: Burleys: I'm SO there!!
thanks for the suggestions!! Funny how I wasn't too impressed with haunted Bookshop. Now after having a Stonehaven/OJK day I had another bowl of HB tonight. MUCH more appreciated this time around

Re: Burleys: I'm SO there!!
I found what I was looking for in HB. I had been smoking a blend made by Brigham that my local tobacconist had on hand (he didn't know what it was called, so neither do I). It smelled of maple, but he assured me that there was no cavendish in this blend, and I could see none. The smoke was rather uneventful - pretty much a buttery taste, soft and mild with next to no bite ... or nicotine, for that matter.
HB opened up my eyes to burley though. The charring light held that musty scent that I find so promising when smoking a tobacco for the first time - in this case, it was reminiscent of the smell of an old, long-unopened book; quite likely, this was only due to the name. Heh. Dusty and muddy (in a good way) is how I'd describe the first bit of the bowl, but it was changeful throughout. Much more complex a smoke than what I had been expecting, and a pleasant surprise. I think I'll have to take another crack at OJK. I think the nicotine punch caught me off guard with that one. Heh. |
