I didn't intend for you have to write a book to respond to my rambling post , but thanks for the explanation none the less. I had no idea how many pipes would likely be needed, but if the number is in the 12-15 range, one carver would be the only way to go. For some reason I thought the number might be much higher. Believe it or not, after I sent the post I got to thinking how many differnent names that appear regularly in the pipe forum and I began to think that MY estimate might be more than a little on the high side. I think the plan is place is far and away the best way to go. Thanks again.

Re: Forum Pipe Pricing

I'm definitely in for the pipe. Plus by the time it's time to pay for one, I'd be time for me to start buying a higher ended pipe. (If we're talking about a month or two, or three ) of planning

Also from the talk of it maybe not having a hand cut stem etc. Can there be options for things like that? I mean if I'm getting a hand carved by one of these guys I may as well get a nice one.

well, was using your post as an example to get info out. i'm sure there are tons of questions, and that's the info that i've been given. wasn't trying to make it seem like i was only talking to you.

rad davis said he could not do the shapes it seems that the majority (if not all of us) prefer - and he said something in an email to kyle about not doing "hand cut" stems, so i gather that to mean no acrylic, but i'm not a pipe maker, so i don't know. i think he's talking about using plain jane, standard pre-made stems.
so because he doesn't want to make hand-cut stems, nor the shapes it seems we all want as our first choice, that pretty much leaves him outta the loop (but if you get a sandblasted tinsky, he'll do the blasting, which would be ironic, don't you think).

i don't know, but since rad davis won't do the shapes we all prefer, i'm pretty sure we'll end up with tinsky hand cut stems. <--- now, if you want a cumberland stem or standard black, i don't know if we're going to be able to ask for, say: 3 coral carves; 2 mocha stains; 3 black & tans, and try to state which type of stems we want... don't know. maybe kyle can ask and see if that causes a few extra bucks to be tacked onto your pipe.

Re: Forum Pipe Pricing

I've got a question. Why wouldn't he do a bulldog shape? Is it something personal or is it hard to carve? Or maybe a bit of both.

This is taken from the email I got from Rad about the bulldog, I didn't even ask about it at the first but he let me know right at the beginning he couldn't do them.

And I can't do a bulldog. ) I don't use a lathe to turn my bowls, so I can't do those nice rings and top.

Re: Forum Pipe Pricing

And this one is taken from an email from Rad about the stems he would have to use, no clue about Tinsky, I am still waiting on a reply on shapes. But this is from Rad.

In order to keep the price within your parameters, I would need to use molded vulcanite stems for the pipes and not hand cut stems.
I do open up the stem for a nice easy draw, and I make it as thin as my hand cut stems.
