Early KBB Kaywoodie Restoration
Hi Everyone,
After reading some of the threads on cleaning and restoring pipes I decided to give it a go with this early KBB Kaywoodie with a push on tenon and large 4 hole stinger. It had a thick, thick layer of cake in it that I decided to ream out with a Castleford t-handle reaming kit. After doing that I turned my attention to the shank, spending a lot of time scrubbing it clean with different bore brushes soaked in rum and various size pipe cleaners. Once that was done (what a mess!!!) I did the same for the stem. Next step was using a soft toothbrush and some Howard's Antique Wood Cleaner to strip off all the grime and old wax. That took about 3 cleanings and then a wet sanding to remove the carbon from the bowl rim and even it all out. After letting it dry for a day I then used my Dremel to buff on some block carnuba wax and polish it. After that it got two coats of Halycon II. I decided to try using Flitz polish on the stem to I think, good results. No soaking in Oxy-Clean or bleach water was needed. I used an old cotton undershirt and a finger! Took some time but the stem's finish looks so much better and has a protective coating on it now. The Flitz didn't bother the inlaid Kaywoodie clover at all. So, there we have it. I think it turned out okay for a newbie and I'm curious what everyone else thinks. Always open to new hints and helpful advice. Thanks for taking the time to check my work out! Cheers, Jeremiah

Re: Early KBB Kaywoodie Restoration
Thanks for the kind compliments guys. I had a lot of fun doing this and will probably be doing more in the future. I got a very satisfied feeling looking at the pipe once it was all done.

Re: Early KBB Kaywoodie Restoration
JRC - jut curious, let's say you worked on the pipe in a semi-leisurely fashion...about how much time did you put into it?

Re: Early KBB Kaywoodie Restoration
Evan,
The initial reaming of the bowl, cleaning the shank and stem, and stripping the bowl took about an hour and a half. I was watching some television out of the corner of my eye while working and I did take my time. The longest step was cleaning the shank....a lot of old tar and goop in there. The stem took about fifteen minutes or so of hand buffing with Flitz to get it to where it is in the pictures. Probably another fifteen to wax the bowl with carnuba and the Halycon II. So, maybe 2 hours of my time was invested. Jeremiah

Re: Early KBB Kaywoodie Restoration
At first I thought the befores were the after pics... but wow that is a nice pipe. In my opinion the ultimate test is in how well she smokes. How's this one smoke?
Great job!

Re: Early KBB Kaywoodie Restoration
She smokes like a champ. It's a small bowl, about a group 2 or a small 3 but I haven't had any draw problems or any residual flavors pop up. Not bad for an 80 year old pipe! Thanks!

Re: Early KBB Kaywoodie Restoration
Good job! I like old Kaywoodies too ... they were as well regarded as Dunhill back in their hayday (1920-1930's)
