Mason jars for storing tobacco

I've been checking my local grocery store for these and because they're seasonal, they haven't come in yet. So I read here today, (not sure who posted), that Walmart had them. Well, I went today and they are "loaded" with cases (12 per) of pint and quart Ball jars. Don't know if it's "seasonal" there, but I just figured I'd give a heads-up.

I guess now I've got an excuse to stock up on tobacco.

Weird. My small town grocery/pharmacy has about 8 different sizes/styles year round.

Wal-Mart carries 'em year 'round here in town. .... I need to stop by there & pick up another case, myself......gunna try to do that tonight. I've a 8oz bag of Esoterica Stonehaven that I haven't wanted to open ... but never had it & am dying to try ... so I need a jar to store this. Also a couple of open tins ... C&D Haunted Bookshop and C&D Mississippi Mud that need a more perminant home.

Hobby Lobby sells some great glass jars with rubber grommets on the glass tops, much like candle jars. I picked up 6 that easily hold about 6 ounces per jar for about $1.90 each. I need to pick up some more in fact!! Zero problems with my tobacco drying out in them.

Pat Catans has them for roughly $1 each...It's a craft type store...I imagine Hobby Lobby, Joanne fabric.... those types of stores would have them...

Just a thought. those of you with a vacuum sealers, they make a really nice attachment that fits over the canning jars. It vacuums out the air and seals the lid. It's not designed to stop spoilage, but will definitely stop drying out. I use it for my coffee all of the time. I can let it sit for 6 months (I don't usually drink coffee in the summer) and pop it open in the winter and it's as fresh as I left it.

Re: Mason jars for storing tobacco

Are the Mason jars with the metal lids OK (with the rubber seal of course)? After reading these posts lately I'm going to this method and have a few jars now.

I use a vacuum sealer myself - just put the whole jar under the plastic dome - and viola! sealed tobacco. I opened a jar of cheap bulk tobacco after only 18 months the other day - it was terrific. I strongly recommend a vacuum sealer for anyone that wants to buy and age bulk tobacco.

Re: Mason jars for storing tobacco

I can get mason jars at Fortinos any time of the year. So far I haven't had to buy them as my grandmother used to make jams and whatnot, and she still has a bunch she hasn't used yet. (sorry for taking all your masons, grandma.)
