What's up with Dunhill tinned tobacco?

I finally decided to try a few Dunhill tins, but it seems that several retailers are sold out of some of the "classic" blends. Has Dunhill started phasing them out?

Re: What's up with Dunhill tinned tobacco?

i haven't seen anything "official", but a lot of ppl on other boards have mentioned (and ebay sellers) that certain dunhill tobaccos are no longer being produced. i don't know which ones, or even if it's true....
i haven't bothered to find out because i haven't liked any of the dunhill blends iv'e tried enough that i'd buy another tin.

From what I've read and heard, Orlick has discontinued the production of all Dunhill Blends, except for two. I believe the two that will still be produced are 965 and Early Morning Pipe. This is hear-say, I have not been able to verify if that is true or not, but the information comes from very reliable sources. As most pipe smokers, who are into Dunhill Blends, must know, Orlick took over the blending and packaging of Dunhill Tobaccos when Murray's decided to stop producing Dunhill Tobaccos. That was about two, maybe three years ago. Unfortunately, IMHO the Orlick versions of the Dunhill Blends all SUCK, for the most part, and many, many others feel that way as well. As a result, I don't think they were selling very well. Anyway, time will tell, but I have to believe that there is some truth to the suggestion that Orlick has stopped the production of Dunhill Tobaccos!

Can get bulk Dunhill at 4 Noogins and PipesandCigars.com..I'd stock up now as the rumour is out that production will stop on most blends. Even if not true, people are buying it up fast.

That is correct, bulk blends are still available, however, there is a little know issue with the Bulk Dunhill Blends. First, you should be aware that the bulk Dunhill Tobaccos are blended in the USA. They always have been, even when Murray's was blending and packaging the tinned blends. They continued to be blended in the USA even after Orlick took over the tinned Dunhill Tobaccos. If you truly love the Tinned Dunhill Tobaccos, whether produce by Murray's or Orlick, the bulk will taste slightly different. Over the years, there have been many debates over the issue of which was better, the tinned blends or the bulk blends. Obviously, there where many, many pipesters in both camps. The point I am trying to make is, if you have always smoked the tinned blends, try a small amount of the bulk blends, and see if you really like them, before buying up pounds and pounds of your favorite Dunhill Blends in bulk!

Not to be an ass--but why would anyone care anyway? There are way way way too many good baccys being produced every day to get stewed over some stuff that's only claim to fame is a little white dot on the label.

I realize there's no dot on the label. I was being sarcastic.

Where I Nightcap-tinned on my drive to work this morning I could just as easily Proper English-bulk on my drive home.

Whoa yeah.... life goes on...
Long after the tin
Of Nightcap is gone.

Bloddy hell! I just remembered how badly I screwed up by not buying 50-lb of Balkan Sobranie in 1991. I must rethink the situation.
Good weekend to y'all. As always, smoke meditatively.

Re: What's up with Dunhill tinned tobacco?

I still have a fair number of Murray 965 tins on hand. I'm sure not going to rush out to buy any of the other blends, especially the Orlik versions.

No great loss.

Me too Hoplophile. I managed to secure a small stash of pretty old tins of Murray's 965. It'll last me a decade and it's absolutely fantastic. Vastly better than its Orlik counterpart. Absolutely delicious English with some age on it and it smells and tastes fantastic when you breath smoke it.

I wonder if Stormin' has cracked the tin I sent him.

Thanks, guys. To answer the common question, not trying Dunhill tobaccos is like drinking beer, and not trying Budwiser... I'll take Whitbread's Ale over Bud any day, but I tried it.

I agree. It was a great blend in it's day. I was smart enough to stock up on it too. I wish I had been that smart with Sobranie 759.

yuch, budweiser....As a Belgian, I am proud to say I only drank it once and will very likely never drink it again.
That being said, the only Dunhill tins I own are London mixture and nightcap, I bought both of them very recently, so they're probably the sucky versions.
I like them a lot though, so I would very much like to know what they tasted like way back when...

Re: What's up with Dunhill tinned tobacco?

Keeping in mind that I'm a rank newbie with no valid opinions thus far about pipe tobak......lol.

If ya'll wanna try the highly prized Murray Dunhill blends of yore these guys have some of the 90's and even 80's vintage in stock. www.pipes2smoke.com I'm not affiliated and I'm not getting a finders fee...lol.

I was talking with my Uncle who's zen master of everything Tobak and he basically told me that the newer Dunhill blends are crap compared to the Murray's cept for Morning Pipe and Nightcap, keeping in mind the later isn't nearly as good as it use to be. He said you just can't compare the current offerings from Orlick to Murrays. So I can't c it being anything but a good investment if someone hords the Murrays Dunhill.

I picked up a sample of Orlick Dunhill 965 from my B&M and again keeping in mind I'm a newb It didn't do anything for me compared to all the C&D Blends I've been smoking.

Time to load up a bowl of 1/2 Pirate Kake 1/2 Star of the East!
