Newbee...Early Pipe Collection (Masonic, Skull, etc.) on Ebay...Worth it???

Newbee here...

Found these early pipes for sale on Ebay all by the same seller. (Link Below). They look real to me but want to be sure.

The Skull pipe and the Masonic Pipe are already "too rich for my budget", but the "Punch Face" and other Skull & Crossbones might not get there. In addition to the first four pipes, he also has listed (further down the list) six lots of tavern pipes (more in my budget).

Once you click on the link below to all his items, scroll down the list a bit until you see the first four pipes....Go to his second page to see the rest.

Are they real? Thanks in advance

i don't know if they're real or not, but are you trying to get pipes to actually smoke?
i don't think i'd smoke any of those even if they were that old.

I get chills thinking of smoking from one of those. How cool is it that YOU could smoke from something that someone 300 years ago smoked from. it's like that scene in Star trek:First contact (I think) When Picard touches the space shuttle that had the first warp drive and gave birth to deep space exploration. I love thinking about all the people that smoked from that pipe and what might have become of them.

Anyways, at 9.95 can you really go wrong, even if there fake? When I was in 7th grade, I was on a field trip to Lexington Mass. and brought a replica one for 7.00. the extra three bucks is worth it if there is even a slight chance they are real. Wish i had an ebay account now.

Re: Newbee...Early Pipe Collection (Masonic, Skull, etc.) on Ebay...Worth it???

You do know what "excavated from a privy" means, yeah?

It means they found the old pit the tavern's one holer sat on top, and while they were digging down through the layers of coprolite (essentially--fossilized poop), they found pipes and coins and bottles and stuff.

Now--if you want to put it in a case and say "there's my pirate poop pipe!", fine. But were you considering smoking the damn thing? There's a reason it's down there--the guy who owned it decided "wow...I should've run a cleaner through it last time, this tastes like shottenheimer...oh well, in ya go!"

But it's been sitting in the privy for how long? A porous clay pipe, in the pit under an outhouse...and there are 2 guys here even thinking about smoking that?

Archaeologists (and some treasure type hunter jackasses) like excavating privies because they're a good slice of life...they never get disturbed once the stuff falls or is thrown in. Well, almost never.
But people lose things in tavern privies all the time, cause...you know, they're drunk. So you find coins, bottles, glasses, pipes (I'll just set you here while I do my thing...you'll be okay...whoops...Joe, break me out a new pipe!), it's good.

BTW--those clay pipes were produced by the thousands. They were the cigarettes of the time, literally. You could even buy them preloaded with rotten tobacco. They didn't last long.

If you want to smoke it, you're mad.
If you want to put it in a case or on a shelf...to each his own.

Looks a little hard. Might have to get Gerry or Tom to crumble it for you.

LMFAO........Great post mang!

Honestly, I think you'd have to be freaking nuts to smoke outta those pipes but that would be an awesome addition to a collection assuming it doesn't smell like Pirate Arse! I can't imagine those pipes will sell for less then $100+

Peace

IMHO, you would be better served putting that cash into a briar you can smoke.

I would strongly agree. Would you blindly rush into purchasing what are represented as "antique" books without an iota of experience in such matters. I would hope not. If you're interested in giving pipe smoking a try, invest 40.00 or 50.00 bucks in a machine made Stanwell, Tsuge, or Butz-Choquin, and if you think it's something you're going to "stick" with, there will be plenty of time to learn what to look for in estate (used) pipes that will save you a bunch of $ in the long run.

Welcome to the World of tobacco Pipes, and hope you will find it to be a pleasurable experience.

One can only hope.

Still, would love to read a "Pirate Poop Pipe" review.
