My figures came from a quick gander at 4noggins.com, and were based on 2 oz. I've never bought more than 4 oz bulk in my life--but that's because I have too many open tins. LOL.

Is the Butternut Burley cased, btw?

I'm just the opposite, if find a blend I like, I'll buy it by the pound and put it up in Mason jars. If I buy those darn tins and forget to check on the contents every now and then, or have room in my humidor for them, (which is almost never) I'll open one up and find the contents just a wee bit on the dry side. Wasted. With the jars I don't have to worry about it and can store them anywhere, and age the tobacco as long as I like, although some will say that the aging process does not work well in jars even though I don't vacuum seal them.

As for the Butternut Burley, like almost all blends, it is either cased or has some kind of topping to improve the room note, but it is by no means soaked in artificial flavorings to the point you can't tell you're smoking tobacco. I've yet to find a completely Au Naturale Burley that didn't come with a bite or bitter taste, but that's only my taste buds talkin', if you've found one, let me know. Butternut got a lot of play in this forum a couple of months ago and most of the comments were very positive.

Yes. Almost everyone that has smoked it likes it--I've only seen 2-3 people who posted that they didn't care for it.

I'm in the process of putting most of my opened tins in small jars, but for strictly cellaring, I'm with Greg Pease...buy a small tin and put it away.

One of my favorite burley blends is MacBaren Navy Flake. However it's about 50% virginia. But that means is will get much better over time vs. blends that have mostly burley. It's got a good flavor though and a very pleasent room aroma ... it's actually one of the few that my non-smoker wife enjoys being around when I'm smoking.

I'm in agreement. It can take a good while to smoke 8 oz. of tobacco, and as soon as you open the tin, the drying process begins. Some tins are better than others, but the type used by G L Pease and others, with the rubber snap on cap seem to be about the worst of the lot.

I probably get about 4 oz in a pint Mason jar with only gentle packing, and the lids seem to be good for several opening and closings before they might need to be replaced and if it's a tobacco I smoke frequently, I'll have 4 oz. smoked long before I have to worry about drying anyway.

But like you, I definitely favor the smaller container size for cellaring, whether it be from the factory, or from home re-packaging.
