New to Burley......and Loving It!

I just got finished with a bowl of a local B&M's "Burley Light" and loved the flavor of it. Does anyone here have any recommendations for burley or predominantly burley based blends to try? The smooth, subtle sweetness and nuttiness are amazing with this tobacco......man I can't wait to try some more!!

Haunted Bookshop, Old Joe Krantz and Solani's Aged Burley Flake spring to mind, as does Crooner (burley and deer tongue, I love it), Old Tarten (burley, dt and some latakia). Also LJ Heart Burley.

Mind--these are only burley's I've tried personally. There are of course others.
Hell, lots of people still swear by Prince Albert for a no frills burley.

yeah, what the double-first-named-one said

I like these 3 very much, in addition to C&D Bailey's Front Porch (laced with a little Perique and Latakia), Orlik's Dark kentucky Flake and PW&W Nut Brown Burley (probably the lightest and smoothest of the bunch IMO). Then of course there's Esoterica Stonehaven which is a dark pressed and stoved VA/Burley flake...pretty much my favorite blend right now.

Welcome the club. Burleys are quicly growing on me, in general, to be my favorite, no-fuss, smooth burning blends

Umm...no, Jesse's Own isn't a Burley blend, it's a very light English with Maryland, VA and Latakia etc. This is taken directly from Rich's website. I really like Jesse's, as a nice quiet, flavorful yet easy baccy--but it's not a burley.

4noggins JESSE'S OWN

Sweet Virginia, and a little Maryland, gives this blend a profound flavor with a touch of precious Oriental for a soft tangy flavor. This is complimented by a hint of Cyprian Latakia and Perique. If you like Virginia's, then this is a wonderful all day smoke.

Re: New to Burley......and Loving It!

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I think I'm going to be making an order for some in the very near future. Since I'm a huge book nerd the Haunted Bookshop sounds very nice!

Why is it that us Literate folk are *Book Nerds*..hehe. I wish I spent more time in HS reading and less time smoking other kinds of bowls...lol.

Anyway, I've got some Haunted bookshop on the way. I smoke my B&M's own Burley blend and enjoyed twas very good.

Thanks for the post. Burley is a funny ass word.

Re: New to Burley......and Loving It!

Are you referring to The Briar Shoppe's "Burley Light Without a Bite"? If so, their "Matured Virginia" is very similar.

They keep it on a shelf behind the counter, and you have to ask for it.

But very similar. I'm pretty sure both have the exact same casing and flavoring, just a different variety of tobacco.

I usually try to keep a few ounces of both around, and yeah, they're very nice. In fact, I think I'll have a bowl right now.

If your going to order the Haunted Bookshop, I would suggest trying Old Joe Krantz too, they are both from C&D. I really liked that blend. Nor'easter is a good one too. Watch City Cigars makes that blend.

That's interesting, I used to buy from a small B&M that carried a house blend called "Light Burley". Actually it was not really a blend, but a very light colored (cubed? it's been a while) Burley that I suspect it was either a Lane or Altadis bulk tobacco. Not a bad tobacco as I can best recall.

At present I'm smoking far more pipesandcigars Butternut Burley than any other straight Burley or Burley blends. Haunted Bookstore, Barbary Coast, and Old Joe Krantz are also very good blends that are primarily Burley with a bit of Virginia leaf and Perique added. I haven't done the math, and since they are only offered in tins, I suspect they will run between 5 and 10 times the cost of bulk Butternut Burley. If you want to spice it up a little, just add a pinch of Perique.

There's actually only a couple of dollars difference, if you buy bulk. I'd rather buy a tin anyway, if possible.

I have yet to have one of the H&H (pipesandcigars.com) blends I really like.

But that's an old story, and ymmv!

By golly you're right! I found both Old Joe Krantz and Haunted Bookstore for approx. 33.00/lb in 8oz tins at smokingpipes.com, while the Butternut Burley was on the order of 19.50/lb in bulk. However ordered directly from C&D the price for both was 50.00/lb in bulk, but they keep their prices higher in order not to compete with dealers selling their products.

Barbary Coast was a bit more, (on the order of 55.00/lb in 8oz tins) but what isn't higher coming from G L Pease which is interestingly blended by C&D. Crazy business.
