Hit the Estate Slope a Little Today
Went rummaging today. I figure if I screwed up, you guys will let me know. This is what I found.
![]() Top to Bottom. 1.Brewster : Has Italy on bottom of Bit. Has some fills, but nice wax finish. $3 2. Brewster (Italy): This one has no fills, and the cake is nice and smooth in both this one and #1 the bits, although a little discolored, are pretty slick. $4 3. All this one says is ROOT Genuine Briar. It is varnished. I wish I could remove it and put a nice wax finish on it. It is full of birdseye. The bit is not chewed up. $3 4. Yello-Bole Spartan: Has a nice flame garin on bottom up then turns a little birdseye. This guy like to bite the bit a little. $2.50 5. Has no name. Meershaum lined. Came with stand. 6.I assume this is a sand blasted pipe. Has no name that I can find. Has a good bit of cake build up. I think I will have to ream this one just a little. This one came with the stand as well. ![]() This is the stand. Got it and the two pipes mentioned above for $8. Also got this Baccy Humi Jar with a ceramic wafer in lid. Baccy included. Should I trust it? This last Pipe is a HARDCASTLE Hall Mark (London) with Otiginal box, bag, and booklet. It has SiV on the metal collar, and a whit H on the mouth piece. Has some beutiful grain in it. Hope it polishes out well. Bit is just a little discolored, with no bite marks. got this one for $9.50 after discount. ![]() I stopped off to get some Wild Turkey 101 to put in the salt, and to sip. ![]() So, in all honesty, did I screw up? Thanks, everyone.

Re: Hit the Estate Slope a Little Today
Not a bad haul. Looks like you have your work cut out for you in the cleaning department, especially on those stems, but as long as there are no cracks, burns or holes, then you should have some decent pipes. Hardcastle pipes were made by Dunhill way back in time ... although I don't think that is true anymore.
I would not trust the tobacco ... and I'd add at least a few drops of water to the Wild Turkey you intend to sip. |

Re: Hit the Estate Slope a Little Today
if your intention was to buy a quick rotation of estate pipes while you learn how to smoke and care for a pipe, then you did a great job.
my first pipe was a Savinelli Hercules, cost me around $60. i still have it and smoke it. i have never smoked a yello-bowl or hardcastle (etc), so i can't comment on the quality of smoke you'll get from them. if i had to do it all over again, which i went from the savinelli to some estate stanwells, to a new Mastro de Paja, etc, etc. i'd probably do the same, but maybe buy less of the ones i got as "deals" and went after what i really, really, liked. like i said in a PM, if you had to choose between 2 pipes, you'll probably choose the one that fits your mouth best/looks the best/smokes the best. i have a few that look awesome, but smoke just "okay". i rarely smoke those now and have thought about trading them in or selling on ebay. in a few months, if you have the means and still have the passion, you'll be looking for better mid-grade pipes... and then in a few years you'll ask yourself why you just didn't save up and buy 1 you were in love with instead of 3 sweet deals? i think you did a great job of finding an instant rotation for someone who's trying to find out what the pipe world is all about. will you keep smoking those pipes 6 months from now? probably so, depending on your passion and income. if the pipe bug bites you hard, and you have enough income to splurge for a $60-120 pipe every month or two, you'll probably be smoking those and using the estates as "testers" for new tobaccos. just my , now i'm broke.btw - won't be on much, heading out to dinner here on vacation. ![]()

Re: Hit the Estate Slope a Little Today
looks like a good start to me, for the price it looks like an excellent way to start a rotation and practice all this pipe stuff without the risk of damaging a valuable piece. once you have a nice collection of nicer pipes, you can always use those to introduce new people to pipe smoking (assuming the pipe actually works). I know some people on here that have helped out newbs with pipes and hopefully us newer guys can continue that down the road.

Re: Hit the Estate Slope a Little Today
alright everyone - HEADS UP!!! Smokeyscotch is on the loose and it seems he has a lot of time on his hands, no self-control and a bankroll of IHT-type money. And he's not afraid to use it
![]() Nice haul ya got there - I hope they work out for you. Heed IHT's advice, he makes a lot of good points. If you take up the pipe like it LOOKS you're going to, it won't be long before you look back and say to yourself "self, I've got 15 pipes, 5 of which are still in use. Wish I had used cobs at first while I hunted and learned about what a mid-grade pipe is all about" Oh wait, that was me..... But I understand it is not an uncommon fate. Yet on the otherhand I have a couple of my 1st pipes that you'd have to pry out of my hands, so who's to judge?I say it's a great and enthusiastic start. So pour a couple fingers of the Turkey, load a bowl of the Mystery Tobac, relax and just have fun
