Benchmades are awesome. I just don't have the cash to put down one or two hundred for a knife just yet. And NJ looks down on fixed blades, which is what I'd get from Benchmade; I think the model 155.

But I'm Really interested in a Zero Tolerance 300, if it wasn't for that darned recurve blade I'd already have one.

    John,
Kershaw makes a GREAT spring assist knife. They are sharp as hell and stay that way. With the spring assist they open like a switchblade. There are others also but I figured I would mention it because no one else has.

As for training, look for self defense classes and some martial arts places teach self defense knife tactics.

My current setup is a Kershaw Junkyard Dog (Gen 1) used for general cutting and utillity. My backup knife is a Benchmade Mel Pardue 3550S. This is my first Benchmade and I am loving it, Sharp, light and very fast opening.

Other knives in my rotation are the Kershaw Leek (an absolutely excellent knife), Ken Onion Chive (Great little pocket knife), or a Leatherman Charge, not really a knife but it has one on it.

I carried a Gerber paraframe like the one bayratt posted, then went to a gerber fast draw and finally to a SOG Twitch XL (with the Ti coating). The SOG was kinda pricey but its an amazing knife.
