Any of you puffers own or care to comment on STI 1911s? I'm looking for an entry level model and their Spartan 4 seems pretty solid. I'm also looking at the Ruger SR1911, feel free to drop some knowledge about that too.
STI make two different lines. They have their custom, competition line, upon which their reputation is based. Then, they sell their production guns, which are made overseas.
Partially correct. The Spartan is made in the Phillipines by Armscor using STI internals. All of the rest of the guns are made in Texas. From the STI website:
Q: Are STI pistols made in America?
A: The Spartans are built for STI (to STI specifications and utilizing STI internals) in the Philippines by the STI division of Armscorp. All of the rest of our pistols are built right here in Georgetown, TX.
The Spartan is a great firearm. The Trojan is an outstanding firearm, sometimes called the best $1000 .45 available. The more expensive guns are phenomenal in quality and reliability.

Nope, old school Colt Series 70 and USGI Remington Rand here. I consider them Dinner Pistols, carry a GEN I Glock 19 for slaying dragons.- George
Dang you're right we would get along quite well. I carry a Gen 2 19 as my everyday, non work sidearm.
Op... I was fortunate enough to get to put a few rounds down the range with a STI Trojan one time. Great shooter, but I can't speak for its longevity.
I will say that my Springfield Mil-Spec has been a joy, only issue was one stove pipe in the first magazine. And it has held up well to some pretty hard hitting reloads.
