    Anyone with an STI 1911?

Any of you puffers own or care to comment on STI 1911s? I'm looking for an entry level model and their Spartan 4 seems pretty solid. I'm also looking at the Ruger SR1911, feel free to drop some knowledge about that too.

    Appreciate it.

Can't give any first hand experience, but I have heard nothing but good about STI.

Except their website seems to be down

No, but my Colt 1911 was always my favorite shooter.

I've been eyeing an STI Escort for a while now. Need to stop buying cigars so I can save up for one.

Not a purists 1911, but one sharp shooter. I love the Texas logo on the slide.

STI make two different lines. They have their custom, competition line, upon which their reputation is based. Then, they sell their production guns, which are made overseas.

In that genre, I'd tend to lean toward the Ruger. Not that it's markedly better, but Ruger is just a fantastic company to deal with, in the out chance you need them.

Dan Wesson have really stepped up their game in the past few years, so don't overlook them.

Partially correct. The Spartan is made in the Phillipines by Armscor using STI internals. All of the rest of the guns are made in Texas. From the STI website:

Q: Are STI pistols made in America?

A: The Spartans are built for STI (to STI specifications and utilizing STI internals) in the Philippines by the STI division of Armscorp. All of the rest of our pistols are built right here in Georgetown, TX.

The Spartan is a great firearm. The Trojan is an outstanding firearm, sometimes called the best $1000 .45 available. The more expensive guns are phenomenal in quality and reliability.

My girlfriends dad has one that he loves. I've never shot it, but have never heard him say anything bad about it. He has some pretty high taste in guns as well.

Nope, old school Colt Series 70 and USGI Remington Rand here. I consider them Dinner Pistols, carry a GEN I Glock 19 for slaying dragons.- George

If they are available in your area consider Springfield Armory 1911 they make a great product within you price range.

Dang you're right we would get along quite well. I carry a Gen 2 19 as my everyday, non work sidearm.

Op... I was fortunate enough to get to put a few rounds down the range with a STI Trojan one time. Great shooter, but I can't speak for its longevity.
I will say that my Springfield Mil-Spec has been a joy, only issue was one stove pipe in the first magazine. And it has held up well to some pretty hard hitting reloads.
