I turned 21 the other day, applied for my CCW permit the same day. Ammo, especially for my AK's (7.62X39) is scarce. I've found a few thousand, and a few thousand for my 9mm as well.

My old man has some 7.62 that he would probably give away! Its Chinese still sealed in a tin case, packaged in 20 round bundles (1000 to a case) FMJ. I think there are 2 sealed and one open with prolly 500 rounds left. Problem is its corrosive powder. Way to much cleanup needed and dont ever leave a round in the chamber over night in your truck after youve fired about 50 rounds of the crap.......you have to drive the round out with a rod and a hammer!!!

Could not PM you but being advanced has nothing to do with the legal issues of using your reloads for personal defense. Google it and do some reading. Thread drift off...Just trying to help with a little info...

Re: Stocking up on ammo?

Personally, I have plenty (for now), but I got to looking because of all the furor over the Obama election, etc. and found that Walmart, Cheaper-than-dirt, and others are waaaaaay short of ammo. I'm sure they'll catch up, but suspect a price increase when they do.

Try finding .223 at a decent price!

I have a close friend who is a licensed firearm instructor. He loads everything he shoots, but uses commercial ammo in his personal protection weapons. He advised me to do the same. Some sort of legal issue.

I've heard this school of thought as well.

From what I understand, if you shoot someone in a defensive situation, there is a 99.9% chance of someone, whether it be the family of the person shot, or the guy himself, persuing legal action.

If your using ammo you loaded yourself, you can bet your bottom dollar the other sides attourney will be claiming you were using superloaded man slaying rounds. Where as if your using factory made rounds, or better yet the same rounds you local PD uses, that position would be moot.

Same thing with putting a bunch of tacticool scary looking black plastic things on your shotgun makes it appear more deadly than your old worn down duck hunting shottie.

It sound rediculous, but it happens. Especially in front of a gun ignorant jury.

Re: Stocking up on ammo?

I also keep a fair amount of ammo around, most of which was purchased before the prices went crazy.

Yeah our club does the same thing. (except for the same day thing)
most of it is .223 and 30-06 (CMP)

Club members will also do bulk buys of 9mm, 40cal and 45acp.

For club members that do reload we will do bulk buys of powder and primers

I just called to be added to an order.
I ordered 8 pounds of 5744 powder, 8 pounds red-dot powder and 8 pounds unique powder, and 10,000 winchester small pistol primers

I do a lot of competition shooting and go through ammo like mad

Yeah, nobody gives anything away. There are a lot of folks who would love to have the Norinco (Chicom) ammo. I'm still hanging on to some myself...it's good stuff. If he were to seriously try to get rid of it he'd have no problem.

a. economy is scaring people and thus they are stocking up

b. fear of a increase in taxes or possibly ban of guns/ammo
One causes for higher ammo prices is Clinton, when he was president, signed a bill not allowing the import of military surplus ammo in the USA or the US military selling their surplus ammo to civilians.
Another is the price of raw material went up dramatically that along with the lack of surplus ammo keeping the price low the prices just about doubled.
