Re: With deer season just around the corner....

I only zero in weather as close to the temps I'll be hunting in as possible, because temperature greatly increases the muzzle velocity, if it is hot, or greatly reduces the muzzle velocity if it is cold.

A change of 20 degrees can make a difference in bullet drop, so a change of 60 degrees can greatly influence the round.

If each +/- 20 degrees causes 1 MOA difference, and the change is 60 degrees, I'm looking at the difference between a clean kill and a miss or a clipped spine.

I will be going out with my Remington .308 Woodsmaster when I got up out of Foresthill (if the fire doesn't burn everything up there). If no luck there I will hunt the Sutter Bypass with my 12 gauge Mossberg 500 and a slug.

Re: With deer season just around the corner....

Man I miss hunting, used to bow hunt as a teen with a Hoyt alpha-tech but then never had time playing three sports. Mostly left me to a breif shotgun season with 870 Wingmaster or my Mossberg New Haven (which was surprisingly accurate).

Not to knock it but never understood using a rifle though. Granted hitting one from 100+ yards is skillful in its own right, I guess I prefered to be up close. Hence why I miss Bow hunting sooo much.

Re: With deer season just around the corner....

The season is almost 4 months away for me. I shoot at the range quiet often depending on what I am in the mood for. As far as when to sight in, I'll shoot 2 cold shots the day before the season opens. She usually shoots where she did last year. Now if I dop it or fall out of the tree then that's a whole nother story. By the way I went back to shooting my old model 600 remington in .243. Pops gave it to me many many years ago when I first started hunting. Don't ask me how long ago that was HAHA

Use rem 870 exspress with deerslayer barrel. Been using it for a long time now.
Seems to get the job done.
Tried a bow, but I suck, so I put it away.

Re: With deer season just around the corner....

I pretty much only use my Savage Model 110 in .270 Win. Ive been wanting to switch to the .270 Short mag tho for a shorter action. When i used to bow hunt i was a Mathews shooter all the way!! But i messed my neck up in a motorcycle accident and the constant practice really gave me nasty headaches so i gave it up. I figured I owed it to the game I shot to be 100% or not at all.
