Raisin's Shack Herf Gift: HR Kona.....

I was given a very special gift at last weeks Shack herf. Raisin, one of the top home roasters here gifted me a 1/2# of Home Roasted Kona. I ground the beans this morning and along with my Mother-n-Law, we drank a 12 cup pot. The coffee was true to Kona form, very bold and deep rich aroma. The only downfall was it's touch of bitterness that settled in the after taste. Great roast otherwise. thank you again for the gift.

Thanks for the feedback, Randy. I was hoping it was only me picking up that underlying "green" taste. I'm coming to the conclusion that those extra large Kona beans have difficulty roasting to the core with the infrared heating elements of the Behmor roaster.

It was very nice to run Kona for the usual Shack suspects. Did they drink it in their Dunkin' Donuts thermal mugs?

no at home in ceramic.........like i stated, good but somewhat bitter. if it was Raisin's first try @ Kona, then great attempt. i have a bro-n-law that lives in Kona and sends me beans done locally....Raisins rate with those.

Re: Raisin's Shack Herf Gift: HR Kona.....

the trick with kona is to get the roast on the light side - it's sometimes hard to stop that bean early enough - because every other bean you ever roasted that lightly tasted like crap. This particular bean has a nice full body and nice after taste at a degree or roast that is unacceptable in other beans.

At least - that is my experience - although I haven't roasted nearly as much as Raisin.

I hope you had some water handy for your pants! *

I've done the Kona 3-4 times, starting with the recommended light, light roast, and I was just not happy with the results. It seems this latest FC roast still did not penetrate to the core, that's the only explanation i can profer for the sour roast. (these were Ona Kona beans, festival winners)

As i posited previously, I do not believe the Behmor modus operandi is appropriate to gigantor beans. Maybe i'll try again when the neighborhood ac's turn off, and my starting voltage top's 116v. lol

guys i dont want to get get caught in the middle of this pissin match...IMO.

the beans were good, and i relayed my tastes to raisin as I told him I would.

yes, i do have an island connection[aka my bro-n-law] that not only lives in Kona but picked beans for shits-n-giggles...thus he knows the growers...that being said......... as stated above......the coffee that i have gotten from him along with Raisin's HR were the same with the excetion of a touch of bitterness in the Home Roast.

I have enjoyed Raisin's previous Shack Herf's roasts and I do not have a bad knock against his craft.

joed,

this is my first HR of Kona, and yes Raisin has been roatin for a good time...that being said, i just gave my tases/reviews of his attempt on this batch as told him. nothing said is derogetory to anyone in specific. i took the above posts as a +/- critique on Raisin's capabilities and wanted to state my opinion on what i sampled. again, i gave an OPINION,and i'm sure you/others who home roast can offer yours. no offense taken and i hope none taken out of context.

Wow this place smells like a mens restroom at an interstate truck stop .

Mike did you play around with P5 with the Kona? We should give it a shot in the Hottop and see if we can get better results. I know that Joe's Gene Cafe did a very good job on some Kona. I have yet to break out the Behmor again since I got the Hottop and don't ever see me using it again.

So can you guys right your name in the snow? I can't get through my last name unless I have a six pack in me .
