Michigan: Smoking Ban Bill Gains Momentum

Take Action!
Exemptions for Retail Tobacco Shops Stripped by Senate

The Michigan Legislature is currently considering House Bill 4163, legislation that, if approved and signed by the governor, would ban smoking throughout the state. The bill passed the House and was then taken up in the Senate where ALL EXEMPTIONS were stripped--including the exemption for retail tobacco shops.

The bill goes back to the House for a new vote. We have only a matter of a few days to contact all state representatives to urge them to exempt retail tobacco shops. Take Action NOW! Share this with your customers-NOW!

I urge all fellow michigan cigar smokers to write their representatives asap! We can not allow such a bill to pass! We must do everything in our power to fight this!

I state wide band still looks to be imminent, but there seems to be a little good news. It appears they added exemptions for tobacco shops, cigar bars, casinos, and bingo halls. The fight is still not over. It still needs to be voted on again and these exemptions could be stripped again! I still urge everyone to write!

I guess they dont believe the employees can make a decision on their own weather to work in a shop where smoke is present. You know we are all feeble minded folk! They are just looking out for our well being you know!

I just used the link to write my state senator and my state rep. Take a tip -- instead of using the "canned" text, write it yourself and personalize it. Let them know you VOTE too!

I don't want to hear any bitchin' from anyone who didn't take the time to write!

I always take the time to write some on my own. I do use points from their "canned" text, and make it a point that they know i do follow who votes for what bills and that i will use it as a determination when i vote next time around!

Everyone in michigan needs to take a minute or two and write! Our rights are being trampled on!

I just got a call from a staffer at state representative Bill Huizenga's office. He's a republican and in the minority so they probably won't even know when this is scheduled for a vote until 24 hours before.

Bill is pro-choice for business owners and against any statewide ban. However, his office tells me this one is a foregone conculsion. The senate will pass it with a total ban in place including all cigar shops and lounges. The house may TRY to get cigar shops and cigar lounges exempted but they are pretty sure they will fail due to the overwhelming steamroller behind this one.

It seems we soon will be forced to order all our cigars online and smoke only in our own backyards..until they come after that too!

I sent my emails this morning. I am amazed that they can't figure out how important these exemptions are. With the economy the way it is they are now going to make it worse.

The even worse thing is, i see nearly all cigar shops going out of business due to this. Most people visit shops for the chance to smoke somewhere. Without that, these companies face a horrible uphill battle. Add on increasing tobacco taxes and they are all but screwed!

Stix will close up shop for sure. All the work the Cigar outlet put into their lounge is now a waste. This drives me crazy. Also, what about Casa in Plymouth where we went for the Nub event.
