Man, I am totally on an old blues kick recently. It all started with Muddy Watters, but it has now led even further back. I have lately been puffing away on some great cigars and listening to:
Bo Carter Blind Boy Fuller Rev. Gary Davis Blind Blake Robert Johnson I am a member of emusic, and after hearing these guys, my saved list is getting pretty ridiculous. Any one else like the old "country blues"? Seems like things were pretty tough back then, helps to put things into perspective. Any other recommendations from you old school bluers?

If you're into old blues you should check out this site. I've spent hours listening there and it's not just short takes like some sites but the complete songs.

I love blues music and if you like old school blues don't forget Lightning Hopkins. A true storyteller with his music.

Re: Anyone listen to old school blues?
Definitely a blues lover here! I started playing guitar when I was 15 with only wanting to play metal and rock, but quickly learned a lot of my influences started off playing blues, classical and jazz. Since then I've been hooked! I feel to some degree blues players are more talented then some of the mindless shredding of metal. I know that I may catch some slack here, but some guitar players just run through scales as quickly as they can, and while that takes an enormous amount of talent, I think that blues is one of the genres that make the guitar actually "talk". You can feel the emotion of the player in those riffs!
If you wanna check out some good blues from today that try and emulate days of old I suggest Keb Moe. Some of his stuff is newer jazz/ blues but he does a lot of old type stuff I think you could enjoy. Also Iron and Wine is a good band that incorporate some old blues stuff. If you have an Iphone you could download a free app Pandora which is a free internet radio where you type in an artist you like and it plays similar artists. I think its on the web as well? |

Got hooked on B.B King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters early on in high school. Those guys are gate blues lol. After that it was Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf, Etta James ect. ect.

If you wanna check out some good blues from today that try and emulate days of old I suggest Keb Moe. ?[/QUOTE] Did you check out Keb Moe in that documentary of the blues done by that director, I cant remember his name, he did good fellas and a bunch of others. Including that documentary on the group "the band" as well as that recent rolling stones documentary movie. One episode featured keb moe, going back to africa and other parts of the south seeking the roots of type of blues he plays. Also, for the prev. poster, mentioning robert johnson, there is a cd out, which has all his known recording on. Even though its quite not old blues, one song I do on banjo in a slow time clawhammer is the rolling stones factory girl. It reminds me of some old time blues. Also check out hudie ledbetter, if you like 12 string guitar. He practically invented the syle of playing. Check out "alabama bound", you will see a lot of pete seegers 12 string style, including arlo gurtheries style came from this, because of woody gutherie having played with him on many occassion, and passed it on. Also if you want some more modern interpretaions, buy some of the early sixty albums by David Bromberg"you gotta suffer if you want to sing the blues. " Thats all I have to say on this subject.
