My favs are:

Ride of the Valkyrie (I liked this even before I got my Valkyries (Honda))
1812 Overture (blew out the left speaker on my pa's stereo)

A few more that I cannot think of the names

Carmina Burana - its dark and dramtic and sections of it are in all sorts of movies so its fairly well known

Don't know if its classical but its a start.

Re: Need Classical Music Recommendations

If you want dark and depressing listen to anything by Mahler. That's suicide music. If you want sad and beautiful try one of my all time favs Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. It's amazing. It was used as the ending credits to the movie Platoon. Oh and you'll probably like Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. It's popular and you'll recognze it as typically used around Halloween time. Oh yeah and one more thing. The soundtrack to "Nightmare Before Christmas" is awesome. They even have a version that was covered by various artist including some classical types. very dark.

Re: Need Classical Music Recommendations

OK you asked for it so hear are some more....

Shostakovich's 5th Symphony contains some dark moments. Also Did you ever hear of Gregorian chant? Very relaxing and spooky. Similarly, but better is "Pope Marcellus Mass" by Palestrina. Really calming and beautiful with a full choir. If you're brave enough to try opera go with Puccini. Man that guy will make you feel like balling your eyes out even though it's in Italian. Also you should probably look into movie soundtracks. A lot of them are pretty cool and dark. Try the Gladiator, Batman etc. Just my two cents. Let me know if you like any of these.

Re: Need Classical Music Recommendations

Heck yes, dude! Most of the stuff I've done has been described as "soundtrack" music. I'm all about the build ups lol! I actually just DL'd a 3-disc album called "Dark Side of the Classical Music" lol! This should keep my ears occupied for a while until I have the scratch to buy some better orchestra synth-packs lol.

That and Buddhist chanting! Both I actually enjoy on a once-in-a-while basis.

Re: Need Classical Music Recommendations

Don't know if it's classical but Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield has always been deep music for me after seeing the movie Exorcist.
