Re: What are you listening to?

As this was a brief day at work for me, many disks have been flying in and out of the stereo all afternoon:

King Crimson- Power to Believe, Red
Robert Fripp- Blessing of Tears
Bill Nelson- Chimera, Console, Whimsy
Liquid Tension Experiment- First
A Howlin' Wolf compilation that my nephew burned for me
Jeff Beck-Jeff
John Paul Jones-Thunderthief

Now that the day is winding down, I will probably switch to Alison Krauss, maybe later some music from a Doomed Misunderstood Artist- Nick Drake or Johnny Thunders.

Re: What are you listening to?

There's a song that I've been hearing on XM's Fungus called Max's Kansas City by Wayne County and the Backstreet Boys. Or it might be Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, it appears that the lineup might be in question. Anyway I know of Wayne County, he was a drag queen who became Jayne County and was a staple of the early NY punk scene, but really hadn't heard much music by him. So this song has been in my head a lot lately and I finally went on Amazon and found a Max's Kansas City comp with this song and some of his/her others so I bought it. Great song. Looking forward to getting the album.

Listened to a lot of Social Distortion today and wound the night down with the Beach Boys Pet Sounds. That's a great album.

Re: What are you listening to?

I been jammin my new iPod on full-shuffle mode in my car for the past week. It is KIL-LER. This morning I had something like this on my ride to work:

Dylan: "Hurricane"
Elliott Smith "Southern Belle"
Descendents "My World"
PJ Harvey "Ballad of Billy Joe"
Dr Dre. "Rat-tat-tat-tat"
Mark Lanegan "Methamphetamine Blues"
Billie Holiday "Gone"
and Beastie Boys "In 3's"

plus a couple things I was not in the mood for - long Miles piece from Sketches of spain, Brian Eno "Music For Airports 2-1", and an Elvis Costello song that was too slow for me today. "Almost Blue" I think.

Hello IHT:

King Crimson is often identified as the founders of "progressive rock," in that their album "In the Court of the Crimson King" circa 1969 introduced elements of free jazz, dissonance, varied and complex time signatures into fairly "mainstream" music. They have gone through many personnel changes through their 35+ year history, but still play music that sharply divides listeners into the love-hate camps.
Robert Fripp is the founder and sole constant member of 'Crim. He has done many sessions as a guest guitarist, teaches seminars in "Guitar Craft", and strongly advocates composer's rights in music biz dealings. His Soundscapes are "a lot of noise from one guitar"- heavy sustain, long electronic delay lines, and processing tones through guitar synth. Strangely moving, sometimes heartbreaking stuff.
Bill Nelson- founder of the "post-glam" Be-Bop Deluxe circa 1974. One of the "axe slingers" of that era, with a wide range of stylistic abilities. Copious solo work- probably 40 or more releases since the early 80's covering everything from piano-based ambient to jungle to found sounds to rockers. Records everything at home!
LTE- a studio jam band with two releases. A lot of "how fast can we play?" stuff, and the amazing Tony Levin on basses.
Howlin' Wolf- powerful electric blues. Manic piano behind some later recordings. Scared the crap out of me when I first heard it as a kid.....
Jeff Beck- Guitar god from the late 60's and 70's, still doing amazing, tasty stuff today. His solo career began to pick up steam with "Wired" ca. 1975, but the fusion jazz character of that one might not be everyone's best intro.
JPJ- bassist for Led Zeppelin. Not the same kinda stuff. "Leafy Meadows" on "Thunderthief" will prove that guys in their late 50's can still balance dexterity and power. (Fripp solo on the track is stellar)

Enjoy!

Re: What are you listening to?

A live album by Jaco Pastorius for me.

Last night I was listening to The Advantage. Not totally sure what the background of the guy or band is who does the songs, but they're remakes of old video game songs by a rock band. It's oddly compelling and does make for some good background music. I have Marble Madness stuck in my head still.

Re: What are you listening to?

Just read in the local paper that the Black Label Society will be playing a small club here in Reno in May. After reading all the good stuff about them here, I'll have to check it out.

Re: What are you listening to?

Definitely go and see 'em, Zakk Wylde is probably one of the greatest guitarists that is still alive. He does awesome shows. Doesn't take a break for 2+ hours, even when the rest of the band takes a quick 10 min cooldown he stays on stage and jams out the solos.

I highly recommend you check it out.
