Re: The Official "I'm sorry for trolling" essay thread

I've been posting in alt.smoking.cigars for quite some time and finding this forum couldn't have come at a better time. If anyone has visited ASC lately, you probably noticed that the percentage of posts by trolls are beginning to out number those who are truly interested in exchaging views and stories regarding cigars and cigar smoking. Looking forward to posting and continuing to review cigars. Somehow while posting reviews I managed to completely miss all of these forums. I'm also a pipe smoker and noticed there is a very large group in the pipe forum as well. Sometimes even I get lucky. F. Prefect

Re: The Official "I'm sorry for trolling" essay thread
I've never really understood what trolling was. And I realize how one has to finesse their way onto a web forum. It seems like a delicate process. I'm curious though, I posted some thoughts about a cigar I tried and mentioned that I'd like to try a similar cigar from the same maker. I could see how someone could misinterpret that as "please send me the cigar that I just mentioned." I think it's hard to "speak" in casual conversation without talking about smokes that you want to try, or that you've heard were good, etc. Being a super noob here, I would hope someone would call me out if they thought I was being a troll.
Granted, I might have misinterpreted this whole thread. Maybe trolling is specifically when someone says "wow, I've never tried that ISOM. I'd really like to try it. Gee, too bad it's next to impossible for me to get it." One thing I can definitely say about this site is how much info there is for noobs. |

Re: The Official "I'm sorry for trolling" essay thread
There is a pretty fine line between excitement and trolling when you get involved with any new hobby. I run 3-4 forums on a few other hobbies, and there is an art to deciding who is trolling for info, and just post-padding, and who is legitimately excited about their newfound hobby.
Great thread...I love ones like this that start as one thing, and manifest into something completely different over the course of a year os so.
