Cigar Auction sites comment and question
Sorry if this has already been addressed, but it may be of some help for other newbies as well. My brother and his son (who are hiking the Appalachian Trail incommunicado) told me about both Club Stogie and Cigarbid.com (aka devilsite) and its daddy site as I first was considering getting into "this thing of ours." If you do your homework and don't catch auction fever, you can get some decent smokes for rock bottom prices. Getting a great price on the bigger names can be somewhat more hit and miss (though it can be done from time to time, particularly if you like samplers).
I googled "cigar auction" and came up with other several sites that do something similar in concept to Cigarbid. I looked at Cigarauctioneer.com last night which is the child site of another cigar outfit, though not as large as Cigars International. It did not look to be as smoothly carried off as Cigarbid, nor with as much product. I notice that JRCigars has an auction component, thought it appears to be boxes only, and though they generally appear to be good boxes, some of the prices didn't look like much of a bargain to me (and I haven't settled on a go-to cigar I plan on buying by the box just yet). I suspect there is an ape or two who may not care for this business model at all, and it is not a complete substitute for a B&M by any means, but I know that some/many still participate in these sites. I can also see that there are a number of folks who are on fairly tight budgets who frequent Club Stogie, and these sites can offer a way for these folks to get decent cigars at a lower price, and for new cigar dabblers such as myself they can offer another educational resource as well as a way to sample a wider variety than we could otherwise. So, my question, after what now appears to be an excessively long run-up: Is Cigarbid pretty much the best one going out there, or are there other places which other folks with more time and experience with cigars have found and liked? What are some of the other apes favorite ways to acquire decent smokes in a non-B&M, auction-type manner? Has anyone else had experience with Cigarauctioneer? Non-related to the auctions, but related to lower cost sticks: Are the JR Alternatives good smokes? Just curious for a CS-member perspective. Thanks. |

Re: Cigar Auction sites comment and question
1. CigarBid
2. CigarAuctioneer That's the order I use them in and the order I check them in...don't discount CigarAuctioneer if you're going to use theses sites as I have found some incredible buys on it...they just don't list anywhere near as much as CigarBid, but they're still great for hunting down bargains...

Re: Cigar Auction sites comment and question
All of the best deals for the Cigars I like have been at Cigarauctioneer.com However, it seems to me in the past yr the deals at that site have been harder and harder to find. Must have gotten more popular or something. Also, forget about buying Primo Smokes like Opus X. Damn near every time they come up for bid some rich SOB that can't get Opus anywhere else buys em all up for a ridiculous price.

Re: Cigar Auction sites comment and question
Thanks for the thoughts. I was wondering about cigarauctioneer. I think I'll keep an eye on things over there, too.
As for the slope, I fear that I am lost beyond help. I've probably dropped around a hundred and fifty bucks at cigarbid within the past three weeks. I found myself wandering over to the site during the day when I should have been trying to get some work turned out, cross checking against other pricing sources (and Club Stogie, too), looking for good deals (and finding a few), just reading about lots of different cigars. I've increased my total humidor capacity by about three or four fold, and I still need more room. All this and I don't even smoke a cigar a day, at least not yet. At my current rate of consumption, between cigarbid, svillekid/ninja vanish, and a nice welcome gift from fineage and my own trips to a couple of decent local shops, I have enough smokes for three years, and I've done it all in three weeks! Anyway, I've had to put myself on a cbid diet for a while. At least I thought I had: I went out and bid on about four or five things tonight, though I don't think I'll get any of them. Is there some kind of twelve step program I can go to for this madness that has gripped me? It isn't that I'm not careful on the devilsite. I'm not buying things at retail prices (I, too, have noticed that some folks just seem to bid on for the sake of winning a contest on cigarbid), but I think a pot habit would be cheaper, though I have no way of knowing for sure. The cigar bug is bad enough: I've already corresponded with a Swiss lass named Emily about getting some Cubans with a wire transfer. I've never bought anything from Switzerland before, and a wire transfer just to accidentally not reveal how much that box of brown sticks in my office cost is really going a bit overboard, particularly when there's no guarantee that it won't end up in the desk drawer of some customs agent. Is it just me or is the floor not that level in here? |

Re: Cigar Auction sites comment and question
not much hope for you - but maybe, Emily will get you hooked on the high dollar smokes from Switzerland - then you won't play on the auction sites anymore!!

Re: Cigar Auction sites comment and question
Agree with what has been said above. One feature that I like about the JR auction is that you can get lucky with timing on your deals if you are patient. I like to go to their 24 hour or less site, find a couple of boxes that I like then lurk until a minute or so before the auction closes, make an offer and more often than not win. Just do your research before so that you don't overbid!
