Mild Bleach bad for Humidor?

There are very tiny mold spores in the humi now. They are lurking in the grain of the wood.

Is the humidor junk or can it be rescued? If it can be rescued, is very mild bleach the answer? PG?

Advice is appreciated.

I would stay away from bleach. Light sanding with some fine sand paper and then a long air out

You still have mold issues? It's got to be a moisture issue. If you open it up and leave it in the sunlight... mold will die.

Exactly ...a couple of days in direct sunlight will get it clean.

I would use hydrogen peroxide for sanitizing rather than anything else if you need to use a liquid sanitizer as it breaks down to water and oxygen and has no nasty smell.

Agree on the sunlight thing. If you can't do that try Everclear or vodka rather than bleach.

Yeah man, now its in the wood. I have the sticks in a friend's box. This is so frustrating. The mold, although the tiniest of spores, is everywhere: top bottom and on the surface of the seal.

I haven't even had any moisture in the humi at all for the least 4 days. But it's there. I'm at the point where I want to see how far I can punt this damn thing.

Was thinking sanding, but that would effect the integrity of the seal, right? I'll try the Smirnoff and update.

Re: Mild Bleach bad for Humidor?

UV light is very helpful in controlling mold. I'm not sure if it will terminate living cultures in your humi, but after you've thoroughly cleaned and lightly sanded the wood, exposing it to the sun for a couple hours would be a very good idea.

Quote:
UV lights. UV light will destroy mold. However, one must have two things — UV light intensity (which decreases rapidly with distance from the bulb) and “dwell time” which is the time that the mold spore is actually exposed to the UV light. The amount of exposure time required to destroy the mold varies greatly for the different types of mold. Some molds are destroyed after a few seconds — others require 8,000 seconds or more.
