Hello to all.

Hello to all. I wanted to introduce my self and say howdy. I've been slinking around here for the last few days getting my bearings. Found some vary good info here for a newbie like me to use.

Needless to say, I'm a novice at the whole cigar thing. I've probably only had about 6 to 7 cigars in the last 2 months but I've really come to enjoy the whole experience. The world just seems to slow way down if not come to a compleat stop when I'm having a stogie.

I had my first cigar about 3 months ago when my father in law got remarried. He's the one I've been looking to for advice on cigars so far. We all sat around after the wedding and had cigars and an adult beverage. How incredibly relaxing it was after a stressful day.

I'm still not entirely sure what makes a cigar good or bad or how to articulate the experience of enjoying or not enjoying one cigar from another. I just know that I've had some really wonderfull smokes and some that were not so good.

I got a small note book and started a cigar diary. I tape the bans in the book and write my impressions of each next to it, along with a rating of 1-10. I hope this will help me develop my sence of what is and is not a good cigar.

My smoking buddie Cole, a vary well behaved and well natured (unless you try to take his bone) Newfoundland cross seems to agree with me on what I like and don't like. He seems to like to eat the stubs of cigars I like and ignors the ones I don't care for. I'm thinking thats a great way do decide if I want to retry a particular brand or not.
However, as my dear wife pointed out, he likes to eat cat poop too. So I may have to rethink the whole letting the dog decide thing.

I suppose I should end this with a review of a cigar I've tried. So here goes. The vary first cigar I bought for my self was a box of Phillie Tatins. Needless to say I was VARY disapointed in this brand. I have sence learned that "real" cigars are made of 3 components. The filler, the binder and the wrap.

It's obvious that the Phillie Titin has lawn clippings and dried leafs as a filler and pine needles and shredded tree bark as a binder with perhaps some dryer lint mixed in. This is all wrapped in what I'm sure is the finest Chinese made brown paper bag. I rated this fine stogie at a -3. Will try again when I've got a gun point at my head, Maybe!

Until next time.

Mike.

Re: Hello to all.

Welcome, good intorduction. As you smoke more you'll be able to say what cigars you did and didn't like between different ones. At the beginning they taste about the same. I can relate to you though, because I learned my lesson with a Phillie too...

Welcome to Club Stogie Mike!

Like you, I also used a notebook to write down my impressions of cigars. It helped me out alot. I do it today for pipe tobacco as well...but that's another story and another "slope"!

Welcome Mike.
Oroville huh? I used to live in Quincy for a couple of years.
Great place to smoke a stogie while looking at the Sierras, but pretty frickin' cold this time of year!

Welcome Mike. Just keep reading and sampling cigars that interest you from the reviews the rest will come to you. We all started out just like you have, well... except for the Philly's.

Re: Hello to all.

Hi Mike.. thanks for the great intro. I'm sure that you will come across many cigars you'll enjoy in the future. Stick around. I've learned a lot of the new stuff coming to market by keeping up with threads here.

Stick to the dog deciding. Dogs are honest and hide no guile!

Welcome.
