I am new to this forum but not to cigar smoking. I am a member of the board of Metropolitan Cigar Society http://www.metrocigar.com.

When the smoking ban goes into effect in April we will lose our meeting/dinner venue. We have come up with a plan to open our own private club. We have rented over 4k sq ft in a commercial area, centrally located to our membership, and plan to open it in May.

It will be completely private, with card access. Members who have bought in as owners will staff it 4 nights a week and Sat afternoons. There will be no employees.

We will have a nice lounge, tv, internet, pool table, poker tables, rentable lockers in a humidified room to keep cigars, booze, wine, etc. We will also have a large room to handle our monthly dinner meetings, which will be catered.

We presented our business plan to the general membership at last months meeting and obtained pledges for over $50k. This fantastic committment from our members will allow us to move ahead with the club.

I'm glad you NJ guys have been proactive in dealing with the smoking issue. IMHO, this will be the only way other than private homes that smokers will be able to gather for a herf. That is excellent you have a place in the works already.

In the big picture, the cigar smokers will not be affected like the cigarette people. Cigar smokers as a demographic tend to have a much higher income and discretionary spending than cigarette smokers. That means that cigarette smoking as we know it will pretty much cease to exist.

The do-gooders win another one, on to beer drinking!

We have a meeting coming up on Wed March 1st. Why don't you come and check us out? Details are on the website as are the details for our business plan. If you do plan to attend please RSVP from the website. We need this to determine what size room we need. We get between 60-80 at a meeting and this month we have a cigar manufacturer from the Dominican Republic coming with a couple of hundred cigars to give away.

If you do attend, look me up at the bar before you check in. I'll give you a guest pass to waive the 10 buck guest fee. You would pay 40.00 for a great meal with wine, beer and soda on the table. Cash bar for liquor. You get a premium cigar at checkin also.
