Cool MI newbie needs some direction

Hi all:

New to cigars, and just got my first humidor. I seasoned it as I have seen in the forums here for a couple of days and got the humidity at a steady 69.8 on my digital meter. Is that an ok humidity? I have read between 70 -75% was desirable. This seems like a pretty good Humi ( I paid $90 for it), has a lock and good seal. Any suggestions? I use humidification gel in the humidor.

Would like some help from my new found friends in the jungle.

Thanks!

Re: MI newbie needs some direction

welcome! Congrats on the humi, some people like to keep their humis a little higher on the rh scale, but I keep mine at 65% all the time. When they are at 70% mine seem to have more burn issues and are a little soft for my tastes, but to each their own! 70% will not hurt your cigars, but anything higher than that is a no-go in my opinion. I personally use humidity beads and have never used the gel, so I can't help you there. Mike (coppertop) told me that a good rule of thumb is the 140 rule, you don't want the temp in farenheit + the RH to be any higher than 140 or you run a serious risk of a tobacco beetle outbreak.

Sounds fine. I think 65-70 is a more accurate range than 70-75. Lots of people like 65, lots like 70, a few like 62, but not many like above 70.

hope that helps.

First off, Welcome to the jungle!

And secondly welcome to one of the most hotly debated topics in the world of cigars. Many will argue that 75%/75F is the optimal, others will claim that 65%/65F is better. Still others will argue that 70%/70F is best. Guess what, the all work well. Yes it will depend a bit on if you have ISOM's or NC's but if you can keep it at 69.8 and it is stable, after you have added the cigars, odds are that you will smoke the cigars before the cigars a ruined by the "less than optimal" humidity.

Welcome to Club Stogie!

I aim to keep my humidor around 62-65 %rh. I find my cigars draw a little better and taste a little better although they do burn a bit faster than cigars kept at a higher %rh. Your mileage may vary.

My 2 cents. I try to keep my humi at 65% rh. Overall I find more people at 65% than the 70 or 75.

Re: MI newbie needs some direction

Welcome to CS! Obsessing over our cigars is one thing we do well here so I'm sure you'll fit right in, 64% seems to work best for me,but what if I raised the temp. two degrees and lowered my rh one percent would that.... aw hell here I go again.
