Rhode Island Newbie...
Hello to all...
I'm a few post late of getting into this section to introduce myself...so I apologize for that, but here's a little about my self. I recently took up cigars again after giving them up probably back in 97 sometime, mainly because I have an obsessive personality and I tend to go completely overboard when I become interested in something new. (humidor...with nothing cheaper than a $12 stick in it and no income to support that type of preference) Here's an example (too many to list...lol)...I always wanted a drum set even though I had never taken any formal lessons. Just banging on my steering wheel and using the brake as my bass pedal. (4:1 beat in heavy traffic was dangerous...lol). I ended up with about $6000 in gear that now occupies my living room, but it's definitely the best toy I've ever bought myself. (about 2 years ago) Yes, I can now play fairly well. Again...only an example. So...last November I picked myself up an AVO at a local shop. Didn't smoke it right away (I forgot I preferred XO's but I can't remember everything from 11 years ago). Before lighting up the AVO...I picked up an ACID Kuba Kuba and lit that up heading out the door of the shop. It reminded me of the old Lars Teton's I tried years ago and liked as something different...even if they really weren't accepted in the cigar community. Long story short...I tried the different cigars from the ACID line and became addicted. I DID fire up the AVO on my way home from CT after being laid off the beginning of last December...and liked it, but I had acquired a taste for ACID's and I just ran with it. I settled on maybe 4 or 5 ACID cigars that I liked and was determined to just stick to those. It was cheaper that way. I didn't have to spend a bunch of money trying a bunch of different sticks. And...I didn't care what others thought about what I was smoking. I was happy...for the time being anyway. Just to end this part of the story...I now have a humidor with a 100 stick capacity FULL of different ACID cigars. (it's cheaper (I'm unemployed...remember?) to buy quantity than buy singles at the local B&M prices, and I needed to store them. No...I wasn't happy with the plastic bags and Boveda packs...lol) But...(there's always a but) spending time online searching cigar deals, I was exposed to the charms of the traditional cigars that I had loved so much years before. I told myself NO...but my heart was telling me Go Ahead...buy yourself one...just for something different than an ACID once in a while. Yeah! OK! That worked out well...NOT! So now I'm smoking "traditional cigars" too (as in also). Some I've smoked at the local shop (of course I had to try a Casa Magna), and some I'm starting a small collection of. I say "starting" because I've got an identical 100 stick humidor on its way for my "traditional cigars". Right now that short list is comprised of:A. Fuente Anejo #48 AVO XO's Ashton Heritage Don Pepin My Father Henry Clay (not sure exact lineage) aged 8 years Padron Aniversario Exclusivo's (10 on their way for a total 11) CAO Cx2 (samples) Arganese Presidente Robusto (sample) Oliva Master Blends 3 Churchill (gift) I'm working on trying $4 - $7 cigars because while I have some money stashed in my safe that will contribute to filling my 2nd humidor, I don't want to spend $500 doing so. My local tobacconist (recently featured in Cigar Magazine) is introducing me to the cheaper "Good" cigars. I'm happy that VSG's are in the $9 - $10 range because it'll allow me to have a few in my humidor. I'm more into buying 5 packs than boxes, only because it allows me to have more diversity (boxes run $200 + vs $60 - $70 for a 5 pack of primo sticks) while still having excellent smokes on hand. But I'm completely open minded to others suggestions. I do use the term "traditional cigars" because while many seasoned smokers may turn their nose up at an ACID...I do like them. Enough to have a humidor specifically for storing them. But...I'm finding that I'm smart enough to have that 2nd humidor for amassing the finer smokes. I'm looking forward to reading everybody's suggestions and opinions. That's it for me... Walt QUICK FOLLOW-UP: Ordered these less expensive "traditional" smokes today to work on filling the new humidor that's on it's way... Avo #2 (5 pack) Avo Piramides (single) Ashton Aged Maduro #10 (5 pack) Ashton VSG Spell Bound (single) A F Hemingway Signature (5 pack) Oliva Serie V Ligero Special V Figurado (6 pack) Please feel free to comment on these selections. Of course today's order also had some ACID's to keep the existing humidor happily stocked. (Atom's and Kuba's) Last edited by klipsch; 02-17-2009 at 06:54 PM.. |

Re: Rhode Island Newbie...
Where abouts in RI are you? I lived in Narragansett for a couple of years before moving to Arizona. Loved the beach but not much else.

Re: Rhode Island Newbie...
Welcome! And as far as the Acids go, smoke away! I always say smoke what you like. Sure, I don't care for them personally, but But that doesn't mean someone else doesn't.

Re: Rhode Island Newbie...
My favorite B&M / Tobacconist recently featured in Cigar Magazine is The Humidor at 1500 Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston, RI. They've got a much nice/newer shop at 5600 Post Road E. Greenwich, RI. Prices are average, but they've got some cigars stashed (ask for sticks on your wish list and you very well may find them here) that are to die for. If you stop in, tell em Walt from Pawtucket told you about them.
