Hey, also newbie here.... one thing I did that help out more than any and was a suggestion from a member here... get your self a note book wite down each smoke from start to finish including what you have ate and drank as you smoke.... you will be able to look back and different smokes and begin to understand your likes and dislikes...
Good luck Tomb

Re: New here, also a couple of ?'s
So I finally got around to smoking my first today. I had hoped to do it this past weekend, but I got a nasty chest cold and could hardly breathe. I chose the 5 Vegas as my first. I had initially intended to smoke the Indian Tabac Maduro first, but when I went to the humi today, the strong smell of the maduro turned me off. I figured I'd go with the smallest one I had since I am on call, so the 5 Vegas was it. Since I dont currently have a punch or cutter, I took the small blade of my pocket knife and made two small punches in a cross-type pattern. Then, using one of those long disposible lighters for ignigting fires and barbeques, I tried to toast the outside, but I did it at little unevenly, so one side got more flame than the rest. I lit and puffed and first impressions were spicy with a bit of bitter at the end, but what amazed me most was where I tasted it. I was expecting on my tounge, but most of the taste sensation was in the back in my upper mouth on the soft palate, which was incredible. After about the first inch or so, it went from spicy to very sweet. It reminded me of a semi-sweet sherry or marsala. I wish I wasnt on call because I so could have enjoyed a full bodied red wine or sipping something like a scotch or bourbon. But the most amazing thing was, right after I finished smoking, I went inside to prepare my dinner, and popped a sweet little cherry tomato in my mouth. The sweet and acidy tomato brought out a incredible flavor I cant really describe, but needless to say, I loved it.
