Hi all - I am a newbie to cigar smoking. I recently returned from a deployment to Central America and was introduced to the pleasures of real Cuban cigars there (Romeo y Julieta Romeo No. 1s - bought several in tubos). I am an avionics tech and flight mechanic in the US Coast Guard.

I am an avid golfer and having a cigar out on the course was what really got me interested in cigar smoking. The relaxation of the act really connected with my game (always in need of relaxation!) and I sure enjoyed quietly puffing away while walking the fairways alone in the hour before sunset.

I have my first humidor (an inexpensive 25ct model with a decent humidification system and hygrometer) on the way and have a small stash of goodies sealed up in a baggie in the time being. I look forward to having the humidor stabilized so I can fill it up and not worry about the sticks drying out.

I have been smoking a couple of cigars during the week and a couple on the weekend over the past couple of weeks- usually with an IPA from my kegerator and a good book or magazine out on the balcony in the evening - life really is good with a good cigar!

I do not come from a family of smokers at all and personally think cigarette smoking is disgusting - so it is a bit odd for me to take up smoking cigars. I am a bit concerned about the effects of smoking in the long term and my immediate concern is becoming addicted to nicotine. I've noticed in the short time I've been smoking that the mild nicotine buzz can indeed be enjoyable when paired with a mild alcohol buzz, and I do not want to become addicted to nicotine. So far the relaxed mood has kept me coming back - I just don't want the buzz to be the reason I come back!

In any case, I joined here in order to learn about cigars - I like to find forums related to all my hobbies, of which I have had many - as forums are about the best way to learn about any single subject this great big world has to offer. I've really liked what I've seen so far and I'll be hanging around browsing for knowledge and good times.
