Hello from East Tennessee
First off, Many Thanks to the folks on this board who post such good advice and information! I've spent a lot of time lurking and searching old threads and have really enjoyed it so far!
I only recently got interested in true cigars, having dabbled with gas station fare in college and thru the years. I stopped in a local b and m on a whim and bought a tin of Asthon Esquires and really enjoyed them. I started enjoying higher quality sipping whiskies with a friend about a year ago and this hobby seems to go hand in hand...mouth to mouth..with premium scotch and bourbon. On the store owners advice I have tried some of the milder cigars..Perdomo, Nat Sherman, but the one I enjoyed the best out of my first group was a Romeo y Julieta Habana Reserve. I got a tin of Don Thomas Maduro cigarillos and have enjoyed them also. I work graveyard, so enjoying a short smoke and a dram has been part of my bedtime routine when everyone else is getting up. I have a coolidor set up...did with the info from you fine folks and am planning on ordering a few samplers to broaden my horizons. Is it normal for a new smoker to like medium cigars at first? I like strong coffee and dark chocolate so perhaps it is just an extension of that. Any advice is appreciated. I look forward to learning a lot and spending some time with you! |

Welcome Aboard Rob!
![]() "New smokers" starting out can have any range of tastes in the spectrum. I believe it's not so much the strength that Newb's seek but rather the wide array of flavors and richness of different cigars. That's what is was, and still is for me. I smoke for the taste of a cigar and the actual nic hit has little appeal to me.

Re: Hello from East Tennessee
Welcome aboard Rob! Nice to have you join the fray!
I think that new smokers usually lean towards mild or even flavored gars . Some, like you, already have a pallet that is gravitating towards stronger flavors. It is all good, cause there are so many great choices available. I think one of the challenges we face is to cultivate our pallet so we can taste subtle flavors and complexity as we experiment with different goodies. Sometimes those goodies are a foray into stronger flavors which is an easier transition that the opposite way. Sometimes I will purposefully prepare my pallet for many days if I am going to experiment with a milder goodie... Rock on Sir! ![]()

Re: Hello from East Tennessee
Greetings Rob!
I got my start in about the same flavor profile as you, preferring medium body and strength natural wrapper. After some time I went through a period of sampling lots of maduro leaf wrapped cigars before ending up where I am today with a preference for med-full cigars with a spicy finish. I would recommend trying lots of different brands especially with Connecticut or Cameroon wrappers. Here are some suggestions (some on my list have Corojo wrappers, which will be a little stronger):

Re: Hello from East Tennessee
Those are excellent suggestions to start on! Welcome from a Tennessee Titans fan way down here in Tallahassee FL!
Here is a good place to start: Big List of Cigars - Good Newb Starter A fellow board member has started this ongoing thread that lists all kinds of cigars to try, and has them arranged by strength and flavor. I recommend buying some singles from that list and try them out.

Re: Hello from East Tennessee
Nice to meet all of you! Thanks for the recommendations! RP 1992 was next on my list to try, but my B&M doesn't carry RP, so I may try "dancing with the devil" soon!
Long time UT Vol fan, but the Titans have definitely gotten more of my attention lately...wonder why!? |
