New Humidor

I got my new humidor and i placed a shot glass filled with hot distilled water in there and i put my humidifier in there with a couple drops of distilled water in it and now i am waiting. Then after that i will calibrate the Hygrometer. The Hygrometer is not moving now, prolly because its not calibrated? Did i do anything wrong? This seems like it is confusing! Thanks

Re: New Humidor

Did you season the humidor? What kind of hygrometer? How long has it been in the humidor with the distilled water? It's not going to register a change immediately. It will take a few hours, even a couple of days to accurately register your humidity level. You can do the salt test to see what your hygrometer is registering, and then depending on what type of hygrometer you have (digital vs analog) you can either adjust it (analog), or just apply the error when you check the reading (digital).

BTW, no need to put in hot distilled water. Just adding room temp distilled water to the humidification device should suffice.

Hygro should always move-if its not calibrated it will just move to the wrong place. Do yourself a favour and dump it if its analogue as theyre useless and get yourself a digi one or just skip the whole hygro thing and get a reliable humidification system like the humidi-puck or heartfelt beads.

You must allow time to pass. You are not dealing with a sponge soaking up water off of a counter, you are dealing with individual water molecules, wafting through the air and being absorbed by the wood of your humi. This will happen, but you must be patient.

Also, the advice others have given regarding hygrometers is very good. Unless you drop some SERIOUS bucks for an analog hygro, it probably isn't that accurate or reliable. Spend $25 and pick up a decent digital hygrometer.
