Question Another Newbi with a question ???

HI there, Have been reading this forum now for a few days and have decided it is time to take the plunge and do my FIRST posting.
From my handle you should be able to work out I am in the UK and my name is Vic.

Now for a question (which I am sure will be the 1st of many):

I have seen mention of cigars going thru a "sick" period - Is there anyway without lighting it of telling this is the case ??

Its possible, but no guarantee. Smell the foot of the cigar and see if there is ANY hint of ammonia

I agree with Poker on how to possibly tell. But by purchasing cigars that are well humidified and from a reputable dealer and then taking care to properly store your cigars, you should be safe from many problems and only suffer from a 'bad' cigar periodically.

Just make sure that you let a newly purchased cigar sit in your humidor or 2 to 3 weeks to let it mellow out, and if you take it out of the cellophane this tends to go quicker. I know it sucks and those smokes just call out your name everytime to open the humidor!

Re: Another Newbi with a question ???

Good question, I smoke em right after I get them from the store. or atleast the next day. Would they taste even better if I purchased a humidor and let them sit for a month or so? The first half is always good, but the second half is always harsh...

Thanks for the answers so far people.

A quick follow up question - If I do find I have some 'gars going thru a sick period should I put them into "quarentine" to prevent any crossover to others ?

Welcome to the jungle. I have a question to the gorilla community at large regarding your original question: do non-Cubans go through this sick period, or is it peculiar to Cuban cigars? I can't remember the sick period ever being discussed in connection with a non-Cuban.

from one newb to another ... welcome to the jungle. in my limited experiences w/isom's i have kept the cigars that needed further aging alonside others. i don't know if it's right the right thing to do. i haven't noticed a difference at this time.

I wondered the same thing. Since most non-cubans are made with aged tobacco, wouldn't they already be past any sick period? I've never noticed any of mine having a sick period.

Now, with UKVic being in the UK, I am sure he is talking about Cubans, which definitely go through a sick period.

summerkc and wetterhorn give good advice, but what they are talking about is different from the "sick" period for isom's.

foxtrot, try purging. search the forums for detailed explanation.
