I think more problems with the burn than the taste....too dry and it will burn too quickly and tend to canoe, too wet it will tend to tunnel and be tough to keep lit...but that is only from my semi-newb experience Tony.

I agree that the burn is an issue...but I think taste also follows. Too wet or dry should also affect taste and draw. Maybe someone with more experience can comment on how taste would be affected...

2 weeks...some say 30 days and some say up to 60! I strive for 60 but on occasion don't make 2.

Re: Ask the Silverback

3-4 weeks at a minimum - 2-3 months still help IMHO. After that just aging.

Agreed...I just think burn is the most evident problem.

My experience is that it depends on the cigar, the age, the time in transit and the vendor's storage conditions. Some cigars are pretty darn good right OTT. Others take much longer to be what they should be.

Some general observations based on my own personal experience:
  • Cigars overnighted -- no problem. Smoke up.
  • Cigars stored properly, well packaged and sent priority in Spring or Fall. Typically OK.
  • Milder, complex or more nuanced cigars need more time
  • Cigars that are under or overhumidified need more time
  • The older the cigar, the more time it needs.
My experience is that taste is definitely affected. A strong, one dimensional cigar may be fine. A complex aged cigar is a pale shadow of its former self when smoked too soon.

If you collect and age cigars, why bother smoking one right OTT? You have plenty of other cigars to smoke and the decision to smoke one as soon as they arrive is largely an emotional one.

I once had an SLB of 2001 JL #1s that I wrote off as being subpar after smoking 7 of them in the first month. I revisited them after three moths and they were spectacular. I wish I had those 7 back.

Let them sit. It's not worth it.

Exactly. That sums it up for me. I attempt to plan ahead a little when obtaining mine. Resist the immediate gratification voice on your shoulder...

Re: Ask the Silverback

Machine-made versus hecho a mano?

certainly the method of rolling a cigar does not modify the taste? what then would make machine-made cigars have an inferior taste (and cheaper price) to hand rolled ?

Re: Ask the Silverback

for the FOG's: somebody wants to know if a Cabinet humidor that is 6' X 2' X 1.5' approx 5 cubic ft. im guessing that has 5 lbs of beads and 2 Oasis' humidifying it and keeps good humidity, do you think the fans in the oasis are pushing enough air through out the humi for good cigar aging? or should there be another oasis installed or fans? or just leave it since it keeps good humidity. TIA

If not mistaken, thats 18 cubic feet.
I heard its reccomended 1lb of beads per 5 cu ft.

(if its currently working as is, I would leave it alone. My old "if it aint broke, dont fix it" mentality lol)

the main reason is because most vendors over humidify the cigars for transit and they do need to sit but tim is right, from my experience it seems that when they sit and chill in my humi for a while they improve. rarely do i smoke OTT but sometimes you cant help it..

I thought you were using the old gorilla math method.

Machine bunched and hand finished cigars are cheaper b/c they use a machine which cuts labor cost and sometimes use leaves that are remmnants from the hand rolled cigars. A Quintero or Piedra Brevas, e.g., uses remnants I imagine, judging from the price. They are OK cigars and can be good cigars once they get some age on them. A H Up Corona Mj, in the tube, is also machine made as is the Party and RyJ Mille Fleurs. I think they use better leaves and therefore start out better and age better. Totolamente(sp?) a Mano is the stamp for machine mades. Anyway, that is how I remember it from last nights SHIT herf -- I did have one or two.
