The cello question earlier I have a slightly different take on. If you are buying and smoking fairly rapidly after purchase it might be a good idea to take them out of the cello. Many are over or under humidified at vendors or stores and might not normalize in your humi by the time you smoke them. If you are in it for the long run... you choose. The flavor leakage argument vs quicker aging thru airflow.
I agree with Mr. K on this, but I have a different solution. I snip off the folded over part of the cello. I think that helps the humidity even out, but I still let them lay for at least a month. That is if I can resist the temptation!!!!!

Since the weather is getting warmer, How do you bring down the temperature of your humidor/tupperdor/coolerdor? I don't have any problems maintaining proper RH (humi beads), but the temperature fluctuates from day to day to cause me concern. I thought about making distill water ice cubes, but the ecology of my humidor will melt it in minutes (global warming in my humi? ).

Does the Cigar Oasis/Plus/2 offer temperature control also?

Thanks
Find the coolest/darkest area of your house/condo/apartment and keep your cigars there. Pay whatever it takes in AC bills to keep that area cool. Buy a wine-ador or temp controlled cabinet...you didn't think it was going to be cheap to keep your cigars cool in the summertime now did you?

Re: Ask the Silverback

The question has been asked but really what is the best way to control temperature in the humi's during the Summer. I spent many days last Summer putting cold packs in the coolers to keep the temps down. It worked very nicely but was a pain in the ass. My coolers are in the basement but when the dehumidifier runs down there in the Summer the temp climbs to about 73 degrees. Is the best bet to just buy a stand alone air conditioning unit to keep in the room, or is there something else?

BTW, the threads rocks! Thanks Dave

Edit: Sorry, just saw your post after I posted this jgros001. Thanks.

Kevin
for me, usually 1-2 days to smoke one.
then at least 2 weeks or maybe a month to smoke any more.

Great thread. Thanks for having us newer gorillaz here. It's a privilege to meet the veterans!

I have a few questions on humidification sources and humidity. 1) What types of humidification do you believe are best for say a 50, 100 count, and larger size, say cabinet/coolerdor, humidors? 2) Also what would you say is the best RH% to store smokes at prior to smoking 'em in general? 3) Finally, what type of humidification do you use for long-term aging, say 3-5 years or more?

Thanks for the advice. Now I have to buy a wineador.

During the summer time my electric bill is close to $300 a month for 1 AC.

i like to smoke in the lower 60's% and age closer to 70%, so i keep my main humi at 67-68% +- and put ones that i know im gonna smoke soon in a smaller desk top humi thats at like 60% or so. thats the perfect world..Sometimes i change my mind and end up pulling something right out of the main humi and spark up..
I use heartfelt beads for all my humi control..which would be good for coolers aswell because they hold humidity so good..for cabinets that dont have built in cooling and humidification, i would use oasis type humidifiers because of the built in fans with beads..I use 2 oasis and 5lbs of beads..works great..Hope I was able to help..

Re: Ask the Silverback

I've never had an ISOM cigar before, so I'd love to hear some first-hand accounts of what the big deal is. Sure, there's the whole mystique, the lore, the relative difficulty (in the U.S. at least) of acquiring them. But what about in terms of taste?

I know describing how something tastes is difficult to do with any precision, but what's the difference between a great ISOM and a great NC cigar in terms of flavor?

Re: Ask the Silverback

My question is about aging cigars. What is the best “relative humidity” to age Cuban cigars? When I searched this sight I noticed that most members prefer to store their cigars at 65% RH. Would this be the best RH to age the cigars or would 70% be better?

Re: Ask the Silverback

Just bumping this question cause I'd love to hear some opinions on what it is about one island that makes it better for cigars than many others.

For example you might say:

1) climate/rain fall
2) inherent knowledge embedded in the ISOM cigar making business
3) soil/mineral content
4) quality control
5) Harvesting/ageing guiedlines

PS: This one will be short ----- varnished vs. non-varnished, what's the difference?

Cheers,

Re: Ask the Silverback

This is just MHO, but I beleive it's 1 and 3 that has the most impact. Any island is a unique being. The process to create the island is a world different from the next one. The soil content is unique to that island. Also the climate and mini ecosystem that is created will also be unique.

#5 may also play a big part, but I have no information to clarify this.

I would say IMO 1,2,&3 are the biggest contributors. Quality control has not always been great, but it is getting better.

For long term aging, 68-70% is best but no higher imo..
