Ask a Question/Get an Answer

The purpose of this thread is to create dialog and knowledge exchange between newer members and older members.

Rules:

New Members
- Ask any question you would like that does not break a rule. Cigars, Accessories... anything that helps your experience here.

Older Members - Use search is not an answer. If you would like to help by answering a question... thank you. If you want to comment about the question having been asked before, that there was another thread etc., do it verbally facing a mirror and feel free to make constipated facial expressions, just leave this thread alone. Answering the question "and" providing a link to a good past dialog, if appropriate, might be a nice thing to do. Violations of this policy will get RG dinged by me and hopefully every one of my friends. (OK maybe 1 or 2 others)

Anybody got a question?

This question is for Da Klugs. I would also like to know if you ever counted all your cigars and would also like to know what is your favorite cigar ever...

Thanks

Re: Ask the Silverback

This is such a great idea....a non-intimidating thread to ask questions is just another way that this place is the most friendly inviting forum on the web.

Great idea!!!

Re: Ask the Silverback

I have a question for the FOGs....Can you guys really taste much of a difference between the Tubos and non-tubos? Enough to pick out in a blind tasting? A lot of vendors charge more for the tubed version and I wonder if the added price is just for the packaging or is there a different selection process for the cigars that get packaged in tubes in that forbidden place?

No. I think of it as being like asking your wife girlfriend about their sexual history. You think it's something you want to know but in reality ...

Favorite cigar? For me it's situational. The best cigar I ever had was a HDM Excalibur # 1. It's the cigar I had after the complicated birth of our first child. No cigar will ever taste sweeter. Don't know about others but my tastes constantly change. Certain cigars stand out for certain circumstances. Doing puff puff passes at herfs requires finding cigars that have unique flavor profiles "in contrast with other cigars that have unique flavor profiles". Punch Nectares, RA Private Stocks and Old Bolis seem a nice and unique combination. Standalone my current favorite cigar (to actually smoke occasionally) flip flops between 80's Paratagas 898 V and NV depending upon which one I smoked last. Fresh cigars is a different story. We live in the best of times regarding "off the boat smokability". Party shorts and the new Cohiba sig II tubos are what has been fresh floating my boat lately. I also think that the regional releases are for the most part pretty darn well constructed cigars with good tobacco in them. However, everyones opinion is influenced by our inventory so don't place to much weight on any one persons opinion.

Paul (A non FOG opinion here) it would be a great test. My guess is that there is little difference in a blind test but that is not the real issue for me. The enjoyment of a particular cigar for me is part of the three C's. Cigar, circumstance and company. The cigar part of Tubos vs non-tubos is a small part of the equation but.... those sig tubos sure are purdy. If you believe MRN about flavor leakage then 30 year old ones might be significantly different (which has been my experience with old Bolis and a few others) not because they started out different, but because they were kept differently. My theory on buying a bunch of the original release sig II's was tied to the "they try harder" on a new release to "get the buzz". I like them so I guess that is all that really matters. 20 years from now I'll be able to give you a better opinion with the buzz voice thing held against the blow hole in my trachea.

Re: Ask the Silverback

1.Should you keep your cigars in the plastic wrap(tube) if it comes in one, or take it out of the plastic to store it?

2. When should you remove the band?

Thanks!

No real set time that you have to. Some remove it before lighting others never take it off. I prefer to leave mine on until I'm about half way through the cigar and then take it off.

The plastic wrap question seems to fall on either side depending on what you feel like. When it all is said and done, I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference, imo.

As far as the band goes, my suggestion is to at least remove it before it starts to burn, but other than that, it makes little difference, imo.
