NYIsles brought up a good question in that he wanted to know what the money from raffles was going to be used for. Initialy, it was going to be used to help defrey the cost of the food and wine, 20% was going to go the store (they're not charging me to pretty much take over the place so I thought it would be the right thing to do) and the rest I was going to use to buy cigars for the troops.

After talking via PM's to Barry, I've changed my mind a bit. The store will still be offered 20% of the pot. I will use the remaining 80% to purchase gifts for disadvantaged kids on Christmas. Every year a local radio station teams up with the Dept. of Social Services who providers her a list of kids that aren't going to have a very good holiday season because of their situation. Many of these kids are in foster homes, homeless shelters, emergency housing, etc... The listeners then call up and adopt a kid, buy them a present as a "secret Santa". The younger kids seem to go pretty quickly, but she always has a number of older kids that don't get adopted and it's usualy my wife that's running out to buy extra presents.

I am going to see how much is left over, adopt however many I can, buy them presents and sign it, "Merry Christmas from the Cigar Smokers of NY". Barry, thanks for the idea of doing something for the kids....you tugged at a pretty big heartstring when you mentioned that.

Pete,

It's awesome to do this.. Ill have to buy more raffle tickets now. With this tough economy I think it is great we will be stepping up to the plate to help bring a smile to the face of children.

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!

Date: Noverber 28th
Time: 1:00pm - whenever the owners kick us out
Location: 2215 Route 112, Medford, NY 11763
Parking: Small lot in front of the store, more parking on side and in back of the store
Directions: Take LIE to exit 64 South. Proceed about 3/4 mile and on your left hand side you'll see a small park. Immediately after the park is a small shopping center. Goodfella's in in there.

So far I have CAO, Arganese and Rocky Patel donating cigars for gift bags (5 or 6 cigars per gift bag) and raffle prizes. I will be raffling off an Oliva Ashtray and a CI Smiley Ashtray out of my own stash that I don't have room for. Xikar is also donating a redwood x3 cutter as well as a couple of hats.

There will be food (4' hero, mac / potato / coleslaw, tortalinni salad made by my wife) and 2-3 bottles of wine. Soft drinks (soda, water, iced tea) are available for purchase at the shop. Booze is BYOB.

So far the raffle prizes include:

Xikar Redwood xi3 cutter and hat (value $92.99)
1 Box Xikar Difiance "The Renegade" 5x50 (value $130)
Oliva Ashtray
Cigar International "Smiley" Ashtray
4 Boxes of Torano Sampler Packs
1 CAO 'O' Ashtray
1 CAO Poker Bag with built in Travel Humidor Back Pack (this thing is FREAKIN' SWEET!!!!)
1 Box of Romeo Y Julieta Havana Resever Churchill (27 in a box)
1 Box of Montecristo Classic Toro (20 in a box)
12 LX2 Caps (I may use these to give to people who don't win something)

Raffle tickets will be 4 for $10. 20% of the pot will be offered to the store who is not charging me to pretty much take over the place. I figured it was the right thing to do. The other 80% will be used to buy toys and gifts for disadvantaged kids on Christmas. These kids are in homeless shelters or are wards of the state waiting to be adopted. If not for this program, they wouldn't have a Christmas, so it's a worthwhile cause.

Altadis is donating a box for the raffle. I spoke to the VIP rep and told him how the raffle $$$ will be for kids and he is donating a box....

I also sent information on the herf to the IPCPR or whatever the initials are. Let's try to make this a media event and put some good light on cigar smokers.

Pete, let the radio station that sponsors the programs for the kids know about the event.. Maybe they will do a remote from the spot to kick off the season of giving...

I am going to email news12 long island about this as well...

This is the email I just sent to news12.com

I have a potential story for you, sort of a feel good piece for your viewers.

I am part of a group of cigar smokers that gather on the internet on various message boards and on Black Friday a group of us are getting together for a smoke which is known as a "herf". How is this a new story?

Well, the answer is this. Pete who is a friend of mine organized putting together this event in which we got various cigar companies to donate prizes for a raffle we are holding where the raffle money will be used to buy presents for needy children on Long Island.

I think in the troubling economy a feel good piece like this might be of interest that a group as chastised as cigar smokers are pulling together to make sure children have a smile on their face come Christmas morning.

If you would like to run a story on this event the information is;

Date: November 28th
Time: 1:00pm - whenever the owners kick us out
Location: Goodfella's Cigars 2215 Route 112, Medford, NY 11763
Parking: Small lot in front of the store, more parking on side and in back of the store
Directions: Take LIE to exit 64 South. Proceed about 3/4 mile and on your left hand side you'll see a small park. Immediately after the park is a small shopping center. Goodfella's in there.

I also gave them my # as a contact....
