Carlos Torano 1916 Cameroon Review

OK, another gift from a friend. It had a nice earthy, spicy scent on the pre-smoke. It had a perfect draw and even burn, but smoke that alternated between very pleasant and stinky. The flavor was pretty tasteless, and the smoke was harsh on the back of my throat. I wanted to see if I could get through it without a Coke, but the harshness was killing me. After a swig of the Coke, I could actually taste some flavor to the smoke, but it all seemed to be in the back of my throat. Overall the flavor was mild or non-existent and it didn't do much for me.

Interesting. I've had about 5 of the 1916's and all but one was very nice with lots of flavor. The one that wasn't so great also gave me the harshness you speak of, but the flavor was still there. I'm quickly picking up a Torano habit!

I've had 3 or 4 of them and all good sticks. Maybe you just got a dud, it happens.

Yes, it's the same one. I have found the ones I smoked to be tasty. I hope yours is as good as the ones I've had.

Re: Carlos Torano 1916 Cameroon

As with many cigars, it's been my experience that if you try to smoke a 1916 too fast, it turns bad and tastes like ammonia half way.

Slow down, make sure the cigar has had some time in a humi. The 1916's smoke best when kept around 65% IMHO.

Re: Carlos Torano 1916 Cameroon

They are worthy of the praise. I let mine sit for about 6 weeks in the humi and it made a big difference. (I just couldn't wait any longer....!
These are an incredible value for what you get. I don't know of many sticks in this size (robusto is my favorite..) that have this much flavor for about $3.35 for a single. I tell ya, Torano could charge a bit more if they wanted to.....but that goes against all that they believe! His creed was "A good cigar at a good price.." This actually a great cigar at a great price.

Re: Carlos Torano 1916 Cameroon

I received one of these from Leafhog, and after I smoked it i lost my notes on it. But they are found and here are my thoughts on it.

This cigar has a nice prestigious look to me. Has two bands and a cedar sleeve. It looks just as nice "naked" as it did in the sleeve. Looked very nice and well rolled

I punched it, lit it, and was a little disappointed in what little flavor i could taste. It seemed to have a very faint woodsy taste to me.

Draw was a little tough, but not enough to complain about.

Held a nice long perfectly straight ash to about an inch.

At about halfway done it is still very mild, but seems to be getting a little more complex. I'm not sure what flavors were there, but they were there

I did not really start to enjoy it until about 2/3 the way done with it. It was then that the flavor started to pick up and get more interesting. In addition to the woodsy taste I believe i was picking up a spicy and maybe a peppery taste

Smoking time 1:18

If the whole cigar had been as tasty as the last 1/3 this smoke would go into my "get a box" list, but as it is i will def. try another one or two to see if I just got a bad one, or if its really not for me.

Re: Carlos Torano 1916 Cameroon

its been my experience with torano smokes that they do a lot better if you let em sit for a while. i was not at all fond of the exodus 1959, signature or the 1916 until i had one that had more than 6 mos of nap time. the harshness really mellows out and turns to flavor. ymmv
