P B Cigars Double Wrap Toro Review

Origin
This cigar came to ungrateful me in the Haiku contest along with two others from CIGma Chi. Belated thanks. Its been resting for a few weeks and it caught my eye (barber pole wrapper) today. So like in the world of rodents and predators it died a burning death today while its brethren laid safe in their burrow.

Pre-Light Ramblings
I have had Sherpa and Gurkha barber poles which burned funny and I think affected my overall impression of smoking them. This cigar looked real nice. Firm well packed, the leaf of the filler and binder seemed unusually fine, even and compact. The pre-light draw was firm as was the 6x50 cigar. It smelled like … well wet leaves.

Initial Thoughts
The wrapper tastes like Corojo real toothy and grainy on the dark (corojo) part of the barber pole wrap. Cut nice and once lit it burned very evenly which shocked me. First thought out of the gate… tastes like Chicken (Dominican) which is good. These cigars are made in NY city home of the brave but not known as the cigar nexus of the universe. The wrapper kept coming to the taste surface after every exhale. Corojo flavor plus. It was nice.

Smoking Experience
I wasn’t going to review this if it sucked. Cigma Chi is a nice guy and that would be rude. The ash was magnificent. I know you can’t taste it but I like a nice long firm white ash and this baby served it up. The flavor was Dominican. That floral nice background flavor for the first half. Kept thinking about the wrapper taste as it kept coming forward on the exhale. Without the wrapper aftertaste this easily could be mistaken for a Torano product.

After the ½ way point it really took on the Corojo flavor profile. Nice snappy med to med plus flavors. Tasted like the Vega (not the all corojo version) corojo Azul I got from Dafu for most of the last half and that was good. Got a little hot with about an inch left and the Arby’s for lunch was a distant memory so I pitched it and went back to posting.. er work.

Final Thoughts
This was a nice cigar was my final thought, cool looking and has interesting flavor twists. Probably stands up to a $ 4- 5 Dominican nicely. Problem, it’s a made in NY cigar so it’s going to cost $ 10-$15. Wrong. Looked up the site. Didn’t have the exact cigar but I’m guessing $ 4. Made in NY and you can be proud of it. Nice call CIGma Chi.

Klugsie,

Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed it overall. Actually, of the NY brands, PBs are my favorite. I have a standby humi of just their sticks which one day will be my lawn/golf/workshop cigar.

To date, everyone I've given these to try have had pretty good experiences. A box of them will be adorned with my personal bands for my upcoming new arrival.

Thanks again!

I'm going to have to check these out. Ever since I heard of the the Hemingway BTL I have wanted to try a barber pole cigar. I understand that the Fuentes are kind of tough to come by so its nice to have an alternative.

good review Klugsie! JDO; by the sounds of this review you will be much better off buying the PB instead of a BTL; BTLs aren't very good IMO.

Yeah afterwards I found a review for the BTL and I would have to agree.
Perhaps a Gurkha Grand Master would do the trick as well.

Re: P B Cigars Double Wrap Toro

I was also gifted one of these by CIGma in the Haiku contest, and I couldn't agree more with Dave...CIGma told me that he couldn't be sure if WE would like these cigars as much as he did, but this one was an excellent smoke with great flavors and a nice burn....you could do a lot worse picking $8 sticks up from your local vendor...Thanks CIG!
