Thumbs up Rocky Patel Sun-grown Toro Review

Got this as a wish from AlCarbon.
I was very interested to try this after having a couple of the Vintage cigars:
Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Robusto
Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Churchill

This one was a nice big ring gauge with good construction.
My first impression after lighting it was that I definitely liked it better than the vintage ones. It immediately had a more balanced flavor - not as dry and mossy, and fuller to begin with - both Vintage were a bit airy at first.
After an inch or so I found that some of the problems were similar to the other RP's - it seemed to do better if I smoked more quickly. If I slowed down too much, I couldn't get enough smoke, although again, it wasn't airy. It just was happier being smoked quickly. Much like the other RP's, it became easier to smoke and tastier in the second half. The smoke got denser, richer, and more complex. I nubbed it because once again, the final draws were spicy and delicious, not at all harsh.

I suppose next I'll try the sun grown Robusto with hopes that the initial warm-up time will be shorter.

Overall extremely tasty, just wish the first half were as nice as the second half. Anyone else have the same experience with the RP line?

All I can say is

MMM-MM-MM-MMM-MMMMMMMMMMMM!

I love these. I did a review of this exact cigar a week or so ago. These are fan-tabulous!

I like them so much better than the Vintage line, Edge...or quite frankly, anything else Mr. Patel has put out.

I smoked one and then bought a whole box...at the cigar store rate...cause I didn't want to wait for a box to come from any online retailers.

BTW...I think you may have just gotten a bad stick. I've had a couple from the box like that, but generally, they have been constructed perfectly.

Glad to hear you enjoyed them. I've got a couple of the sun-grown torpedos' sleeping deep down inside my humi somewhere... been meaning to get one out and try it.

After reading your post that day might come sooner than later!

Re: Rocky Patel Sun-grown Toro

I smoked a PC tonight and I found it very smooth and there was a good amount of power, but it was very floral tasting and very acrid on the finish. This is the first I have tried, I have 2 toros so I'll smoke one of those next. It was also very one dimensional.

Somehow I missed your review, I'll have to check now.
I wouldn't call it bad - very enjoyable overall, it just had to get going. I'll definitely try one again, and hope it will be even better.

I'm confused. At 8:46 you had not yet tried a Sun Grown (click link for context, but see quote below):

Now by 8:53, you've gone to the local store, bought one, and smoked it?

I had a Rocky Patel Toro last night and I really enjoyed it. I will grab another later after I try to experience a few others. There was definitely a big difference compared to the LvH #3's I've been smoking.

What I meant was I smoke RP on occasions at the golf course. I have tried them before and think they are a pretty good cigar and on my way to the course will stop at smoke shop to get one of these to try.

Shit. Why am I explaining myself to you anyway.

Re: Rocky Patel Sun-grown Toro

imho the rp sungrowns are one of the top 3 cigars of the year......patel put out a limited edition box.....with 40 sticks....10 each of the sungrown....cameroon legend.....maduro fuerte....and vintage 1990. they were all churchill sized cigars.....a size reserved for the 500 limited edition boxes he put out.....you can't get the churchill size anywhere else...and it is MUCH better than the robusto size. i have some torps on order...am hoping they taste more like the churchill than the robusto.......

a number of patel sticks are really kicking butt lately. the edge in maduro with a few months on it is a dream stick......and i just had a indian tabac classic with a corojo wrapper that was another of my favorite smokes of the year.

my box of indian tabac maduro robustos have one of the oiliest maduro wrappers you will ever see....and if you have some patience...after about 4 months of aging they begin to taste like pure candy!

Re: Rocky Patel Sun-grown Toro

really? you guys liked the sun grown? i really didn't like it at all. i got one for free at a RP tasting and i put it out about an inch into it. i thought that it was horrible. it was just a bunch of fruity creamy flavors and there was no flavors in the cigar that i liked. i was very dissapointed in the sun grown, i really love the vintage line and the edge kicks ass. the stogie shop i go to just recently got some more indian tabacs in and i live all of those, but i just couldn't stand the sun grown. o well, i guess it's jsut a personaly preference. since you guys liked em sooo much i guess i'll have to pick another one up and try it again and smoke it all the way down this time. i just can't stand paying like 6 bucks for a cigar that tastes like that when i could get something that i really enjoy, like a vintage mmmmm good
