Gran Habano Corojo #5 Pyramid Review

So, I am a curious smoker. Everytime I go to the cigar store, I always browse for about a half an hour to try to find something new and interesting to smoke. I had tried another cigar from this line (the Gran Robusto) based on the stellar reviews it had been given on top25cigar.com, and I was a little disappointed. I decided to try this Pyramid on a whim, and it turned out to be quite enjoyable.

I have to say I am a sucker for colorful/nice looking bands, and this one is pretty attractive in my book. The cigar itself appeared to be well constructed, this particular one had no marring imperfections in the wrapper that I could spot. It took a few tries with a torch to get it lit, and it lit unevenly at first, burning steadily only on one side. I put it down and let it burn on its own for a minute or two before warming up the other side, and it soon corrected itself nicely.

The first thing that I have to note about the smoking experience is that the draw was really excellent. Not too easy, but not tight at all, just enough so that I could get a really good amount of smoke after it had been properly lit. I would definetely say that it is a fuller-body cigar, and the taste was consistent all the way through. I like the pyramid shape, and the way that all that smoke comes through a little tapered opening, and the cigar itself was thick and had a nice weight in my hand. The burn didn't run at all after it was lit properly and it had a nice tight ash that held on pretty firmly. It tasted sort of (and I'm going out on a limb here because I am really no good at describing taste) like chocolate. I usually drink coffee with my cigars, and for me, it is a big indicator if the cigar complements or clashes with the coffee. This particular cigar went really well with my cup of joe. The taste of the cigar was very smooth and consistent all the way to the end. I smoked it till it started to get hot, way down to the end, then I put it out. I would estimate that it took a little over an hour to smoke. For the price, this one was definetely a great value. I'm going to have a few more and see if they are consistent from smoke to smoke, then maybe think about buying a box.

Price paid: approx/ $4.00

Nice review! I've tried a few of the Rothchilds #5 and they were very good. I would also suggest the CAO Piranahs if you haven't tried them yet. I tend to stay with the shorter smokes because of time restraints. Great smokes for the golf course or when fishing.

Good smokes for the course. I like the shorter smoke for when I take the dog for a walk.

Very nice review.

Congrats

Very nice review. I was waiting to smoke a couple more of these before I reviewed them, but you saved me the time. I really can't add anything as your review hits my experience right on the head. The corojo is a lot smoother than the Habano #3 version that I had last night. I got turned on to the Gan Habano by Kansashat. Really nice cigar for the money. I find the flavor of the Gran Habano line to be very close to the Punch line of cigars in taste. I am hoping to make the Gran Habano Corojo #5 a replacement for the Punch Rare Corojo Pitas that I am slowly running out of.

Re: Gran Habano Corojo #5 Pyramid

Not to put a damper on the good follow up to my review, I just smoked another one of these about an hour ago and it was no where near as good as the one I reviewed. The burn was uneven and went out multiple times, and it had a rather harsh taste. This one was from a different store, where (I suspect) their humidification and storage is not quite up to snuff, because this is not the first sub-par cigar from this store from a line I know to be quite good. However I was wondering if anyone had smoked quite a few of these (like a box), and knew if they were consistent across the board with taste, burn, etc.

Thanks.

Happy smoking.

I've smoke about 15-20 of the #5 roths and they have been pretty darn consistent. Had a few with burn problems, but they all tasted good.

Re: Gran Habano Corojo #5 Pyramid

I got three of these yesterday. Burned one in the car waiting in traffic to go home. As one of the other gorilla coined the term I won't take credit, but these definitely come with a fire proof wrapper. That's the thing about heavy duty non-habanos. They are wrapped in heavy gauge stuff, nothing subtle or delicate about them. The full flavor is in your face from the first draw. Reminds me a little of an Aroma de Cuba but smoother. This one had tons of strong coffee, bitter chocolate and wood tones for the 1st half but I kind of got bored and gave it the heave halfway through. I did this mainly out of respect for the ISOM I planned on smoking later in the evening and didn't want to blow out my palette for the day. To my thinking this cigar is a good kick down smoke.
