Re: CFB PSD4 by Altbier

Guess I'll weigh in here since Galaga has resurrected the thread today.

I picked up some of the 5 packs and have sampled 6 of these cigars so far.
Below is my, very brief, opinion on these:

RASS - yuck, too wet still. hard to light and spongy. These will need extended conditioning -- possibly a year or more. Not worth the wait imo. At least not in my humidor where real estate is a precious commodity.

HdM E2 -- same as above.

PSD4 -- decent cigar, could use more age, but nothing really special.

BBF -- unopened, it had similar physical charactaristics of the RASS -- going to wait.

Punch Punch -- same as the BBF

Mc4 -- kick ass, killer cigar! All 5 are gone. Going to order a bundle or two soon.

Final thoughts: once the feeding frenzy slows down, i will be curious to see how this brand fairs in the market. I think these are excellently constructed cigars with lots of potential, but have been rushed to the market. We'll see. As far as Cuban clones -- let's not go there.

Did you get any choc. barnyard aroma from the unsmoked cigar....mine kept loosing that aroma.
Did you get any Choc/cedar complexity. It was there at the end but kept fading away, could be frustrating to some.

Well, kind of subjective, but what i liked about this cigar was it's all around performance.

As far as it's pre-light aroma, as i recall, it was pleasasnt, hints of barnyard, but nothing exceptional.

As far as it's flavor, well this was it's winning point imo. It had an excellent straight up tobacco front with smooth (choc/cedar???) undertones. It had a mid-tongue attack with an excellent finish. The profile was consistent throughout the cigar and i did not notice any fading as you did.

Still i remain suspicious of this line of cigars, as i feel they have really been rushed to market and are selling too young too fast.

I've never smoked a PSD4 - what should I try FIRST - the CFB or the actual PSD4?

What do you think?

If you have a choice, the PSD4 by far....not the imitation.

It would make sense to smoke the PSD4 from the ISOM first. In fact smoke a couple of them to become used to the smoke from several cigars in the box before trying the CFB PSD-4. Dont expect the CFB to be a clone. It isn't. It is a replica made most likely with different tobaccos to come as close as possible to the original profile. Very much like your trying to reproduce the taste of a great rack of ribs from you favorite bbq place. You don't know exactly what spices the restaurant put in its rub so you come as close as you can. (hope this is a good example). When we eat the ribs you make at your bbq we don't judge them by the restaurants food we just enjoy the ribs you make for us. Try to judge the CFB's in the same mannor. They need a name, they come very close to the ISOM profile, is the cigar by itself good? This is not going to be a cheap alternative to Cuban cigars but a less expensive line of very good cigars once you get it in your mind to judge the value of the line for what it is. Just my .02 mb

Thanks, Mike. That makes a lot of sense... Time to try to find a PSD4 now!

Thanks for your help, everyone!

I had a lot of fun reading through this thread yesterday. Any updates on how they're smoking after some extended humi time? Differences in flavor in the recent bundles?

the manufacturer is dropping a lot of the line due to the problems getting the tobacco. The cigars on the popular ones were coming in so green it was hard to smoke.

It appears now that the frenzy has died, they are getting some more age on them I had an mc5 (discontinued) that had a yellow cello and it was quite tastey.

Re: CFB PSD4 by Altbier

a vote of support for george here.. These are good! It is odd that they taste so good/comparable to the real deal. Now i dont think they are going to put cuban cigars into extinction, but i dont think that is what george was saying..

Try them, they aren't expensive, and you will see.

Re: CFB PSD4 by Altbier

So far I am still getting delivery in bundles of 25 from the supplier. This must mean he has inventory that has been able to rest as the balance of the line that will continue to exist will start coming in bundles of 10. True, the frenzy is over but the sales are steady and that is gratifying to the supplier and of course me. (;-)> Once I stop getting bundles of 25 then I'll know for sure some of the dropped lines are gone. You will need to watch the site or contact me in PM.

I agree with George here I think the slow down has done the line some good. In the begining the cigars were about six to 12 months old but after the frenzy started they were coming in as fast as they could be made and we did experience some raw, young cigars. I'm not having that situation lately and don't think we will in the future. Although having said this every cigar I have ever smoked has benefited from aging. Except my Phillies Blunts of course I just smoke them too quickly to care. LOL mb

I picked up a bundle of these for a present for my local b/m. He absolutely loves this cigar.

Re: CFB PSD4 by Altbier

Wow! Never had a MC5 version but the rest....(Tried another just now to make sure my thoughts on this were clear.)

I guess opinions vary. I think these taste like ass. Well that's not fair. They taste like the fakes that have been going around and those taste like ass.

These things have Cuban names but do not taste like Cuban cigars or any cigars that I have smoked. I'm unclear how to describe the flavor.

OK here is a shot at it.

Drink 5-6 bad margaritas. Eat 10-12 White castle's (with cheese). Top it off with Shots of Jaeger until you recycle each way. Do the recycling on a average Dominican cigar. Let it dry out.

Then...

Steam them over a bubbling vat of industrial cleaning solution.

Let em dry out again.

Seems like a lot of trouble to achieve the taste here but I guess everyone has his own preferences.

However, the fact that these are triple capped presents issues beyond their ability to be sold directly on merit.

Re: CFB PSD4 by Altbier

I second the "tastes like ass vote". At least as pertains the one I think I had.

Nic seconds bundle stock, which oddly is precisely how they are marketed. So I guess one shouldn't complain.
