Thumbs up Edge by Rocky Patel Review

I went to my local cigar shop early this week and I had a nice chat with Tom, one of the employees. He has been smoking for quite awhile and is very knowledgeable about cigars. Well he told me that the cigar rep. came by and let him try a Edge. I asked him "Isn't that cigar made by Rocky Patel?", he responded with a surprised look on his face "Why it is!" I think he realized I wasn't just you everyday college guy and had some knowledge about smokes. He told me he was very impressed with it and they were getting a box of 100 in soon and I should stop by later in the week and get a few. Well I went by today and there they were in all their glory. They looked gorgeous, so I bought three of them.

Appearance: The Edges I bought were the Torpedo Maduro 6.0 x 52. They looked amazing in that big old looking box which contained 100 smokes.

Construction: The wrapper was well constructed and was very dark and oily.

Flavor: It was a stronger more full bodied smoke, which had the flavor of leather and dark coffee.
The box claimed "Warning: Professional smokers only – smoke only while sitting!" I noticed that the
smoke was fairly stung but it did not hit you all at once. I got a nice buzz while smoking but I wasn't overpowered.

Conclusion: I would definitely smoke this again and might even buy a few more soon. Another fine smoke by Rocky Patel.

Side Note:
CI has The Edge 'X-Outs' by Rocky . They claim "Quite simply the logo on the box is the only difference."
They come in boxes of 20 and are only $69. I might get a box of these.

The Edge Maduro's I've had were surprisingly good. My expectations were low but then I saw a pic of them and they were one of the oily-est cigars I'd ever seen. I had to try one.

Like I said they were surprisingly good and I still have some stewing in the humi.

Re: Edge by Rocky Patel

I had my first Edge Maduro the other day. I wanted to like this cigar so much. To me, this is the way a cigar should look. A dark, oily wrapper and no band. Sadly though, the smoking experience wasn't what I had hoped for. The flavor of the stick I had was ok, but it had alot of burn problems. Uneven burning requiring a lot of touchups. Also as inviting as it looked, there were wrapper problems. But I'm wondering if this didn't come from being shoved in a box with 99 other sticks.

I'm not going to pass judgement based on one stick. I'm hoping this was just the one cigar. Like I said, I really want to like this cigar so much. Great job on doing a review. Very informative.

Sounds like you got a bad stick. Give it another shot, I think you will enjoy it.
My burned perfectly with no relighting required and the wrapper stayed
intact down to the last inch. Maybe it was overhumified?

How does this one compare to a vintage or sun-grown?

Re: Edge by Rocky Patel

I smoked my first one of these last night. I had the corojo as well. I was a very beautiful wrap, alot of oil, very smooth and light little veins running all over. I put a good cut on it and found that the filler was wrapped nice and snug with a medium draw. Jsut abuot how I like mine to be, not too light on the draw but not hard. Just enough resistance. I lit it and let it sit for abuot a minute before puffing on it. When I bought this cigar, Tom, the guy that works at my local shop told me that the reason they caled it The Edge was because it literally took you to the edge of being full bodied...he said it never left medium but it was right there on the edge of full. He was 100% correct...it was strong but not too strong. It let you know it was there but without reaching up and slapping you in the face. It left a nice strong tobacco taste after blowing out the used smoke. I found that it went well with a nice cold Dr. Pepper (I know, it sounds bad but I'm addicted to Dr. Pepper) The soda washed otu some of the bitterness that would accumulate on my tongue after about 4-5 puffs and would bring out the nice flavor of the tobacco again. I did encounter some burn problems in the last half of the stick, nothing major though, no relighting was required. It just wanted to burn a little crooked, thats all. The first half burned great. I had to put it out befoer I nubbed it so I don't know how well it did in the last inch or so but it stayed nice and consistent throughout. I got another one in the humi I might smoke or if someone else wants to try it I'd send it to you.

My new thing is to pair my smokes up with a nice Diet Sunkist or a glass of Kendall Jackson Vintage Merlot 2002..

I really wanted to like this cigar because my shop owner said alot of good stuff about it. But i really didnt like it that much, it tasted bland to me but everything else was perfect. I might try anouther one because there only like 5$ around here i hope it was just that one stick because its so nice looking.

Re: Edge by Rocky Patel

This cigar kicked my butt today. Too strong for me, but the taste was nice and construction was great. I tried to appease it with a coke but it didn't help and I had to put it out about 2/3 through the cigar.

Re: Edge by Rocky Patel

These things are powerful sticks. I like the maddie a bit more than the corojo, but they are both damn good. Entirely different than the RP90's or the SG's, kinda hard to compare. Helluva lot stronger than those though.

Re: Edge by Rocky Patel

I smoked the maduro the other day and really enjoyed it, picked up 2 more maduros and a natual wrapper( ?) and thought it was a good smoke as well. I think I'll be looking for a box of the maduros for the humi. good stick IMHO
