La Aurora Barrel Aged Review

This is my first review so please go easy on me. A few weeks ago a little bird sent me one of the La Aurora Barrel aged cigars that should be hitting the street any day now. Note that this review is based on a prerelease sample and not accurately reflect the finished product. I only took a few pictures before lighting this one up, I didn't take any while smoking it - sorry all.

The tobacco in these cigars is aged in old rum barrels before rolling. This makes for an interesting flavor. They don't really taste like a flavored or infused cigar. Yes, the rum is something that you notice if you're really concentrating, but if you don't it's not evident - It just helps add to the flavor of the smoke - and that my friends is a good thing.

The smoke shipped in cello with a red sample band wrapped around it. The construction was pretty good (there are some fairly large veins on the wrapper), but the pre-light draw was even better. There are hints of rum but it's not overpowering and certainly doesn't taste fake or artificial. In a blind test you'd notice that there's something special there but might not be able to pinpoint it exactly.

I had some slight burn issues upon lighting; I'll blame them in part to the wind, and in part to a new lighter. I don't feel that the final product will have these issues.

The draw was just about prefect, not too tight and not too loose. The smoke was silky smooth with some hints of something slightly woodsy like you'd expect from the inside of a barrel. Once my pre-light burn issues were corrected, it burned smoked very evenly. This is a great cigar, defiantly worth checking out when they hit the streets. I'm looking forward to trying one of their final versions of the product when they hit and I'm anxious to see what the band artwork will look like.

Appearance – 9
Construction – 9
Flavor – 9
Value – N/A - it was free
Overall Experience -9
Overall Grade – 9

They should be hitting the streets any day now and should retail from $6-$9 each.

OUCH - I was told last week that they'd be here in November - hopefully they won't take that long. Either way when they get here they'll be good.

Thumbs up Re: La Aurora Barrel Aged Review

Smoking my first one of these right now. I like it very much. I note a peppery flavor with a background note that is slightly sweet/molasses combined with je ne sais quoi. The peppery disappears after the first third and the slightly sweet combined with je ne sais quoit begins to dominate. Overall I give it a 41 out of 46.

This is why I don't do reviews

Move over Rover, I AM La Aurora's #1 fan!!!

I did get a couple of the #4's at Rain City...they had JUST come in the door (thank you Kristen!)

Smoked one in the car on the way home; they were obviously still overhumidified from the DR, as the draw was tight at first and it was difficult to keep it lit.

The first impression upon removal from its cello was of a very pronounced sweet, pungent fragrance of fermented sugar cane. Very nice.

Pre-light draw delivered the same wonderfully pungent aroma and a sweet impression in the mouth.

Lit well and burned true for the first third; no taste or even a hint of a flavored cigar, just pure, honest tobacco and pepper.

Got rangier and more complex in the second third. Pronounced waves of vanilla and soft spices - cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, that kind of thing - as well as a persistent sense of pepper in the background.

Last third all the flavors married into one solid impression of spices with a meaty sort of essence.

Overall, the flavors were pleasing; there is a harshness lying in ambush if you get overeager and draw too deeply or too often, though; although it's difficult not to with a cigar this tasty.

The burn was erratic; good and true in the first third, started going sideways in the second third, was a canoe-ing disaster toward the end, and you don't want to get it too hot with over-correction because of its harsh response to heat.

But the burn issues, again, I attribute to the stick being overhumidified. This is a cigar I will definitely keep at the lower end of my humidity spectrum and revisit in a few months to gauge the difference.

All in all, very much worth the price of admission. I look forward to having the other sizes in this style.
