Saint Luis Rey Belicoso Review

Saint Luis Rey – Reserva Especial Belicoso

This stick was an unexpected pleasure. At a 52 ring gauge and just over six inches long, this cigar sat ready to give me a good 1.5 hours of pleasure. The wrapper was a bit rustic with several veins. This SLR was made in Honduras with a wrapper and binder of tobacco from Nicaragua. The filler contained, in addition to Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco, some leaf from Peru. I have been finding that lately, most of the cigars that I enjoy contain some Peruvian filler leaf. This cigar was to be no different.

The cap on this cigar was well made, and I made my cut just below the end of the cap, giving me an opening about the size of a corona. The pre-light draw and taste was very good. There was just a hint of sweetness to the wrapper. Not an artificial sweetness, but a mild natural sweetness. The cigar lit well and burned relatively even considering all of the veins in the wrapper. I don’t think that I touched up the burn more than once. Volume and taste of the smoke was very good to me. I was having this cigar in conjunction with a glass of Remy Martin VSOP Cognac, and the cigar complimented the cognac most excellently. In fact, the cigar seemed to bring out the oak flavor of the cognac. The drink and the smoke never competed with each other, but worked hand in hand for my pleasure. I have also had this cigar with coffee, and again the SLR seems to compliment the coffee.

To this point, I have been very favorably impressed with this line of cigars. At around $68.00 a box from JR’s, I believe these to be an excellent value and will not hesitate to purchase more of these in the future.

Thanks for the great review punch! I haven't tried it, and though it was on my list, it just moved up.

Re: Saint Luis Rey Belicoso

Great review. I just smoked my fifth one out of a box I bought a month ago. I was going to review it, but I think you got it covered. I really, really like this cigar. I think that the wrapper tastes like a mild version of the LADC corona (Honduran). I have felt there is a nice bready quality that keeps the smoke together. I had a few I had sat on for about six months and then bought a box; I payed about the same price as you. I have a soft spot for belicosos because I just like the way they feel in the hand. However, I can say straight up that this cigar is a keeper. I think a little aging does it wonders. It is definitely worth a try. I really, really enjoy them.

Thanks for the great review. Glad to see I am not a lone when it comes to the Saint Luis Rey brand. In my profile I listed the Saint Luis Rey Rothchild as my Favorite cigar. Although some may be turned off by its size (50 x 54) you owe it to yourself to try one. A great cigar at a great price.

I also find this line of cigars to be outstanding. Cheapercigars.com has the best price on boxes that I have found. Belicoso box @ $54 before S&H.

Re: Saint Luis Rey Belicoso

The Rothchild is one that I like. Tried the corona [I believe] and did not care for it so much. I'll have to try the Belicoso, with the thicker guage it will bring in more of the flavor. To me these are some bargain smokes for quality and price.

Good review & thanks,

Ken
