Thumbs up La Vieja Habana - Leather Patch - Habanos 54

Introduction

Heard many mixed reviews about the La Vieja Habana line. I’ve had a few “Leather Patch” series cigars sleeping in my humidor for over four months now, so I thought it was time to see what these are all about.

Pre-Light Inspection

This cigar is the Habanos 54 (5 x 54). The wrapper is a very smooth tan colored Cameroon leaf called Adobe. The construction was high quality and I thought the cap was done very well.

Smoking Experience

Very easy to light up properly and maintain. The aroma and flavor were impressive right from the start. A very pleasing mellow smoke continued to emanate throughout the life of this stick. The flavor and strength were consistent for the duration. No surprises there, but I enjoyed it so much I didn’t want it to change.

Final Impressions

The La Vieja Habana “Leather Patch” series Habanos 54 is a very good cigar. It lived up to everything that it claimed to be. For me, it made for an excellent breakfast cigar. I’d recommend it to anyone in the mood for a mellow mild-medium cigar.

Re: La Vieja Habana - Leather Patch - Habanos 54

Excellent! I very much like LVH's. I have yet to get my hands on any leather patches as none of my local tobacconists carry them. I'm not very fond of the early years (really didn't live up to my expectations) but I have a lot of hope for the LVHLP's, just wish I could get my locals to order some as i'm not about to buy a 5pk or box untill I smoke one.. My wife is also bugging me constantly about getting her one of the actual patches as she has a coat that she wants to sew it onto. Great review, thanks for sharing!!

BTW, are these also short filler, or long?

Re: La Vieja Habana - Leather Patch - Habanos 54

they are long filler....have not tried one.....come close to getting them a few times on cbid.....but they went for a little more than i wanted to spend on them......seem like the kind of stick i would like....since i like just about anything with a cammy wrapper.

as for the early years.....i absolutely HATED the first one i smoked....put them down and 2 months later smoked another one and really liked it. they store these in PINE boxes....so the pine taste takes a little time to get used to but i found it to be unique and interesting once the cigar had some time to settle a bit.

What are these patches you mentioned? Are they included when you buy a box of these cigars?

Thumbs up Re: LVH , The Patch, and Closet DE Fandomship.

Yes, I believe I found this out through the CI catalog and once I mentioned it to the ol' lady she bugged me for quite some time , tempting me to purchase a box. Knowing, that I did not like the Early Years (Although, im now convinced to try one again if I can ever get my hands on one), I wasn't about to delve into such a commitment (with the cigars , not my wife! ).

http://uptowncigar.com/lavieja.jpg Here is a pic of the patch, pretty simple looking, but come on man its a cigar related patch! Thats just cool. Does anyone know if there is a story behind naming this make as "Leather Patch"? My first assumption was the at some point in the smoke there was a patch of leathery tasting tobacco. I would also like to see a sampler of 2xLVHEY, 2xLVHFumas, and 2xLVHLP. On the subject of DE I would also like to point out that I had really enjoyed the industrial press line but appearantly not very many people liked them, thus pushing them out of production and decreasing availability (so I was told).

I had purchased a 5 pack of IP in the Mass Size from CI along with my purchase of a 5 pack of DENat White Rabbit, and the omnipotent "Drew Estate Natural Special (CI) Edition Chest" of 31 Cigars by Natural for $150 shipped in the most beautiful wooden, nicely constructed and decorated chest. The chest sits snuggly next to my Drew Estates ACID Humidor feathering our good buddy Chester and his bike enjoying a smoke in ACID City, a metropolis built entirely of ACID Cigar Boxes. In my Natural Chest, I store all of my cigar and pipe accessories including humidification fluid, Electric rHValue Readers, Cutters, Pipe cleaners, RG Chart, One of my travel humi's, and my ACID Tin which I store all my used bands in.
