Padilla 1948 - Torpedo Review

Since it was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving I decided to treat myself to a few single sticks at my local B&M, Iwan Reis, in downtown Chicago. Browsing through the selection I noticed a Padilla Torpedo that caught my eye. Picking up the stick I noticed a bar code similar to the Padron's. I knew I had to try it so I grabbed one, along with some other beauty's, and placed it in my humi for enjoyment at a later date. Since it had been about 40 degrees in Chicago as of late I wasn't sure exactly when I'd get around to lighting it up.

Low and behold I found myself a few items short of our Sunday night meal and instantly thought it'd be a great time to walk over, grab a few items at the grocer, and enjoy my newfound Padilla on the way home. After purchasing my goods I walked outside the store and cut the end. Taking a few draws I noticed some woodsy flavors and a slightly loose draw. Time to light this thing up.

The first few puffs found me enjoying a nice woodsy flavor and the first few exhales were on the medium bodied side. The remainder of the first third continued to be cedar notes with a slightly sweet flavor nearing the end. The stick was definately on the medium side although there were some tinges on few of the exhales. The construction on the cigar was great and the burn was even.

The second third of the cigar was medium boied and went back to the cedar flavor along with some hints of a black cherry like sweetness. As the 2nd third continued the small trace of sweetness went away and it hit the higher end of medium. The smoke was plentiful and the draw seemed to be just right. The ash was a light gray with very small flecks of white. I'd compare it to some of the Padron's maybe. The first ash to fall was about 2 inches in. At this point I noticed that the center ash was a much darker, almost black color. I hadn't noticed this on many other cigars.

The last third of the cigar was a continued medium flavor leaning slightly to a more bold side. The sweetness returned at the end but it was not as pronounced. The flavor did not turn bitter even after I nubbed it to about 1/2 an inch. The only complaint on the construction was at the end when I removed the band I noticed a slight tear in the wrapper. It did not cause any serious burn issues though.

Overall the cigar was very pleasant and had some diffrent flavors appear. The burn was consistent throughout. I could see this cigar aging nicely. It seemed to have a bit of age to it even though I later found out it is a very new cigar to the market. The cigar was not spongy at all when I pinched and the flavors seemed to have a bit of age in them. Aged filler maybe? After a little searching I discovered that the Padilla 1948's have a Corojo wrapper with Criollo binder. A great combination it seems! I will certainly be picking up a box of the Torpedos later this week.

Re: Padilla 1948 - Torpedo

I have smoked about 5 of these and found each one a bit different in favor and strength. I'm not sure what to compare it to.
A bit sweet, and earthy maybe. but other than that it seemed very unlike most of the other Padilla's.

Thanks for your review.

Thanks for the great review.
I've enjoyed every Padilla I've got my hands on.

Great smokes.

Re: Padilla 1948 - Torpedo

great review. I haven't tried the torp yet, but the robusto is one of my current favorites. They really do have an "aged" flavor.
