Fuente 858 SG Review

Thought I'd take a shot at this, though it will be short with no pics, this time.

My local B&M has a limited supply of these, and knows I really like the 858 blend, so when I asked him if he got any along with his supply of Anejos this fall, he got a bit of a poker face which slid into a sly grin....Score! I picked up 3 to try out.

Smoked in my garage on a cold, rainy afternoon after putting up more Xmas lights on the roof in the rain. Drank water while smoking this. Pre-light aroma was very nice, and the appearance was very nice. It cut well with my Xikar, and I lit up with my cheapie Ronson torch. Good draw on this throughout the experience. Only a little burn issue on the last 3rd, which was easily touched up, and no issues with it trying to go out on me until the nub. It had the familiar flavor of the other 858's I've smoked, but I got a spicier taste from this one before the 1st 1/3 was done, and it only got better as I smoked. The ash was firm, though it would occasionally show the "outward flaking" that I see with the other 858's I've had. But the ash held together well, and I had a good 1 1/2" or more ash before it dropped the first time. Did that all the way through. Good smoke throughout, and great flavor all the way. Flavor and the spice really intensified in the last 1/3, and I was wishing this was an 8" stick instead so it would last longer . I ended up pulling out a pair of small needle nose pliers to hold it, so I could really nub it, and am glad I did, as the flavor just kept building and I was really enjoying the cigar. With less than 1/2" or so left, it did not want to stay lit without a lot of work, so I let it go.

I know there is a lot of internet hype with these, as they are somewhat hard to get, but based on my first one, I don't think it's hype; these really are a fine cigar. I can see why the elder Fuente had these made just for him (if the stories are true), as it is a fine blend with this wrapper. I'm looking forward to smoking another SG, and will give this a 9 out of 10.

I hope to find a box of these someday. I looked around yesterday and all of the B&Ms I visited had no idea that they were being produced!
